I just got my 34UC97 today and I love it. I posted in another thread that the backlight bleed wasnt to bad but my paranoia kicked in so I thought I'd look a little closer.

At first I noticed a little in the top left and bottom left corners but then I stood back and watched it boot and it seemed much worse than I first thought..

Please take a look at the attached photo and let me know what you think. It is:

A) Horrendous backlight bleed and should be sent bac,
B) IPS glow with a little bleed - Perfectly acceptable
C) A bad photo do it again

If you can't tell that your photo is obviously extremely over-exposed then you need to see an eye doctor immediately. Also, you need to vastly reduce the brightness if you are keeping it cranked in a dark room. Most cell phones lack the proper settings to take a good picture. Here's a proper picture:

It is overexposed of course and that is like pulling the monitor's pants down. The upper left is possibly some backlight bleed but mostly all 4 corners are glowing. Glow should shift when viewed from different angles right ncx? Backlight bleed won't shift. It's pretty severe in that corner as far as I can tell.

Yes I know the images are terrible. They were quick shots with the iphone I'll try to get some better ones tonight. Im trying to figure out if its worth going through the pain of sending back.

@MenacingTuba Naw.. sorry, but check out these shots. I'd say these photos are pretty much 20% overexposed on my sent back LG - incredibly hard to get it right, but these nonetheless show off the discrepancies at the corners. Have a look here: http://imgur.com/a/Ig5WG . Please believe me when I say that I've tried everything. Completely unacceptable bleed (or to be more accurate glow), especially given the money. Stunning monitor otherwise.

I'm 'upgrading' my LG via RMA to a new 34" Samsung - as if I haven't spent way to much - but I'll take very the minor drawbacks of VA to eliminate that appalling bleed any single day of the week.. it's just that bad.

^^^^ All of this.

I have the brightness on my Dell which supposedly uses the same panel at 25. There is a bit of blacklight bleed in Alien Isolation, but nothing to complain about. Other dark games fare better.

I'm sorry, but on the 34" LG the glow/bleed practically obliterates the blacks/dark greys at the corners on my last unit. BTW -a brightness of 25!!!! is way too low unless you're some kind of vampyre or something... .bizarre. Confirmation Bias perhaps?

The LG goes back as it has appalling backlight problems. If the Samsung is better. then I'll post here... though I won't turn on the lights.

Yeah that's not so bad really. Put on a dark movie like Riddick or something and turn out the lights to make your decision. The glow looks pretty standard and I'm pretty sure what's in the left upper corner is backlight bleed. It's moderate at that brightness. 20/35 is pretty arbitrary as different models have different range curves in my experience. If you want to get it right 110-120 nits is pretty standard for reasonable bias lighting and dim ambient. I tend to black out my windows and use led bulbs with yellowish shades for bias. That way you can run with very little glare, still get enough ambient to see well and you won't get headaches from staring at a screen in the dark.

Yeah, see that looks a lot better. About the same as mine but on the top left and right mine are a little more uniform. And of course, it's hard to judge back light bleed with photographs because even small variations in exposure will make it look worse.

This panel has been weird. With most LCDs you want to set contrast around 90 and then adjust your brightness up until you get a nice picture... on this monitor, all the usual setup didn't work for me. I ended up with contrast at 79 and brightness at 25. I also needed to tweak the RGB a little, but that didn't affect contrast, brightness or gamma.

As for returning it... do whatever you feel you should do. I was fully aware that a really wide IPS panel like this would suffer some bleed, but it's not really all that bad. In Alien Isolation, it's more noticeable, but in the darker scenes of Metro Redux series, I didn't really notice it. On all other games, yeah, not an issue at all.

It's a nice, quick monitor that is absolutely fantastic for gaming, but it's not without flaw. This monitor has really low backlight glow. Blacks are really nice and black except bleed at the top corner edges and a little glow on the bottom left/right.

Taking some time looking at it now and its not that bad. Looking at it while booting in a completely black environment was not entirely fair to the monitor I think. I have reduced the brightness as it was at 70 and hurting my eyes. That has helped I think I need to play around with the settings some more but at this stage I think I'll keep it. I was aware that there would be some bleed I just wanted to make sure my copy wasnt to bad.

My monitor has a lot more contrast than it needs as well as more brightness than it needs. I could sit in front of my monitor, the way it's set now, for a good 12-16 hours if I needed to. Thank god I haven't needed to do that for a long time, but I've spent days, if not weeks in front of my monitor scripting.

Eye strain is something that's affected me my whole life so I'm always really picky when setting up monitors. I always needed a CRT with at least 75hz, luckily LCD's don't strobe like CRTs and 60hz is fine.

It's also really easy to over-contrast this monitor... while it looks great for gaming and doesn't really hurt surfing or other computer work, it'll throw personal photographs off quite a bit.

Yeah Im being careful with the contrast. Photo editing (ironicaly given the pictures posted) is something I do alot of so I need to be careful. Do you have the LG or the Dell?

I have the Dell. Same panel, but different electronics. Not sure if it's the same back light though. I just know it's WAY too bright. I guess it's designed so you can use it in a heavily lit or natural direct sunlight environment.

I was on the fence about returning mine too. So I sat there and went through Lightroom while adjusting my rgb until my photos looked how they were supposed to. After that, I was satisfied.

Yeah it was very bright out of the box. Was actually giving me a headache. I have used lightroom a bit and it makes it much easier to pull apart the images :) Im leaning towards keeping it.
