My current rig:

Cpu: Fx 8370
Cpu cooler: CM hyper 212 EVO
Motherboard: Asrock 970 Performance Fatality
RAM: G skills ripjaws x 8gb ddr3 1866 mhrz
Gpu: evga gtx 480
Psu: thermaltake tr2 600 watt
SSD: kingston v300 240 gb
Case: rosewill stealth

I am in the market for a new gpu and have considered everything under the sun. It has been an up and down struggle but i have narrowed down my choices to a gtx 970 (msi gaming or evga ftw+) or a 390/390x. I am currently gaming at 1080p but in the future i might decide to try 1440. I love how quiet and power efficient the 970 is but the 3.5+.5 gb ram is a concern. As of now not many games utilize 4 gb of ram but in a few years thatll change. So is the 8 gb on the 390s worth it for a slightly higher temp and wattage? I know in the grand scheme of things amd doesnt use THAT much more power than nvidia but there is a difference.

Id prefer to not have to get a new psu but if i have to i will. If the 8 gb of the amd will benefit me more 3 or 4 years down the road then perhaps its worth it? Or are the 8 gb 390s just marketing tools to sell cards?? I have flip flopped so many time between cards and im tired of researching this lol its been MONTHS!!! I wanna decide and stick to it. So please someone help me and give me UNBIASED opinions. No fanboys please.

Yeah fanboysim sucks. All it does is add confusion

The whole issue about the 970 is the ram so why would i get a card that has 4 gb just like the 970 but is worse in most categories? If thats the case the 970 is best but this whole topic is if the 390 with 8gb is better in the long run or if its just an empty promise of longevity.

if you want future proofing you should consider getting top line gpu like 980 ti or AMD Fury x comes out tomorrow .either of those gpu will last u 3-4 year easily
biggrin.gif

otherwise u can get gtx 970 will be most power efficient or r9 290 probably cheaper price.

Not to sound like a smart ass, but why go with a 290 that wouldn't make sense vs a 970 due to the 290 not having 8gb of vram.

amd 390x will throw lots of heat into your system, the water cooled fury might be a good choice for hi end but i just got a 960 4gb and its a pritty good deal, no way would i be using a 970. got a 8320e to install 2morrow and im glad i got the 960 as it is really quite and cool, gigabyte 960 4gb oc'ed to 1580mhz is pritty sweet at 1080p

but if you wona be rocking 1440p i'd probably just save up and get the 980ti or fury water cooled

reread carefully what i said, r9 290 will be cheaper then gtx 970 being more power efficient. and op didn't mention his budget. 8gb vram overkilled for 1440p.

Why would you not use a 970, and how is a 960 4GB a better deal?

Zotac (dual fan) gtx 970 is $309 on newegg.

Powercolor turbo duo R9 290 is $229 and is the best value option. (Dirt rally free)

You can get a zotac 4GB 960 for $219 bit it won't come close to an R9 290 surely............ (comes with batman arkham knight)

Here's a 960 review with benches. (G1 gaming.....even faster than the zotac you can get cheap)

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/gigabyte_geforce_gtx_960_g1_gaming_4gb_review,20.html

I'd suggest a 290 at the going prices, or step right up to a 980ti/fury X.

not to sound rude or anything this thread seems like its being trolled.

cause you posted exact same question as in this thread http://www.overclock.net/t/1561793/graphics-card-question

Gohan77 , Piccolo55 same person lol?can't be coincidence.i am done
No trolling here, he had posted this question on another site and no one really gave him good answers so he went here. As for me I posted it prior to him posting his on here. For the record I'm not on ether company's side. Just have a lot of questions. We came to this forum because people were giving us fanboysim answers on another forum. And no we aren't the same person, not any thing close to that lol.

Well it loses to the R9 290 by a good 20% from what I can tell.

It's not a bad card, it has it's pros like low power consumption and is fairly fast and quiet. Probably goodOC headroom.

But if going 1440p I'd go for the R9 290 for sure.

Is 1440p even worth the expense of getting the monitor?
