Hey guys just a heads up the media creation tool for windows 10 is up https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 (mods please delete thread if not appropriate)

"Use the media creation tool to download Windows. This tool provides the best download experience for customers running Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. To learn how to use the tool, go to the Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool page. Tool includes:
File formats optimized for download speed.
Built in media creation options for USBs and DVDs.
Optional conversion to ISO file format."

I already downloaded both an iso and also made a thumbdrive.

Edit: For those wondering about how activation is going to work here it is

" You can clean install Windows 10. This means you can clean install Windows 10 on any PC. Whether it will activate without a product will depend on the factors mentioned below.

A clean install or upgrade of Windows 10 will automatically activate on an existing PC if you follow the rules. That is, it must have come with Windows 7 or Windows 8. And the version of Windows 10 you install must match the version of the previous OS. If you had Windows 7 Home Basic, for example, you must use Windows 10 Home. If you do, it will work. If you don't, you will be prompted to activate and you will need a Windows 10 Pro product key."

From my understanding and have read is that you have to upgrade your current windows install and then you'd be able to perform a clean install after that. Currently I only downloaded the iso and created a win10 usb key. I will wait some time before installing win10.

im downloading this now and formatting clean install with my pc and just using my win 8.1 oem key... i will letyou all know if the key works or if i have to do a clean update...

I would appreciate it.

Is your Win 8.1 key an upgrade key from 7?

By default, Windows 10 builds are pre-keyed, meaning, you do not have to enter a product key and should not be prompted to enter one even after Windows 10 has completed setup.

Understanding Product Activation in Windows 10:

In previous Windows releases, when you installed an upgrade version of Windows, if you wanted to reinstall the upgrade version, you had to first reinstall the qualifying version from which you upgraded, reactivate it, then upgrade again and reactivate again.

With Windows 10, this is no longer the case. Once you have upgraded to Windows 10 and activate, you can simply create a bootable copy on DVD or USB and reinstall just Windows 10 without the need to reinstall the qualifying version and it will reactivate automatically.

Quote:

"Windows 10 handles keys differently. When you upgrade to Windows 10 via Windows Update from Windows 8.1 or Windows 7, the process registers your computers hardware, and qualifying OS with a Microsoft Product Activation Server. The device is then considered a Windows 10 device.

Subsequently anytime you re-install (or clean install) the installation checks with those servers, finds the unique installation ID and produces the validation"
This should explain most your questions hopefully, sorry if it's a bit late.

Also, my 8.1 key was an upgrade from windows 7. There hasn't been anything special about it in the install, and you shouldn't have to enter any key during the install as long as the key you're using now is registered/valid.

ShowKeyPlus Download this and it will show the new windows 10 key and your old one.

i ended up having to upgrade the win 8 copy, but im using win 10 and its actiavted and it was a clean install sort of... it gives you option when you upgrade, i had a windows.old folder but disk cleanup took care of that and its basically a clean install still... everything is running great so far...

i got win 7 for free from a friend, paid 14.99 for win 8 launch upgrade, and now win 10 is free... haha epic. and thanks man for the showkeyplus i just wrote down my win 10 key xD
