Need help with Athlon II x4 620!

I pulled this CPU from my old HP computer, I'm trying to combine old parts with this build to save some money before I upgrade.
But I'm new to overclocking so I don't really know where to start.

Specs:
  • AMD Athlon II x4 620 2.6GHz Processor
  • Stock CPU Cooler
  • 78LMT-USB3 (rev 6.0) Motherboard
  • 16GB Crucial Ballistix DDR3 1600MHz RAM
  • 750W Ultra PSU
  • Geforce GTX 960 4GB
I tried looking through other threads and forums on this CPU, but I haven't had any luck with this setup. I played around in the bios too, but whenever I try to bump up CPU frequency I crash and have to revert back to default settings. I'd appreciate any advice, thank you.

Good luck with that chip , my graphic card 7850 is half the performance of your 960 and I had severe cpu bottleneck on my old athlon II x4. Running bf3 bf4 was ~55% gpu utilization only ... I think you may reach 30%

That certainly is not a great overclocking cpu or board. That being you should be able to get to 3.2 GHz without much of a problem. Anymore than that and your board may not be able to handle it. You just need to add a tad of vcore. Say .05 volts. I would think about maybe paring the ram back to 8 gigabytes if you aren't using two 8 gigabyte ram sticks. Since you have to overclock using the BCLK make sure to set all the dividers so that the busses stay at near stock speeds. Especially your memory frequency.

That's because the frostbite engine loves CPU. However, for 90% of the games on the market, particularly none AAA titles as of this date, he should be okay.
Outside of gaming, it's a decent budget PC with enough chip for everyday computing by a long shot.

That board is pretty underrated. I have no problem getting an FX4300 to 5Ghz and a 6300 to 4.5Ghz. It shouldn't have a problem maxing out a quad Athlon.

OP you should be fine at 3.2Ghz with stock voltage-1.4 and 3.5-3.7 shouldn't need more than 1.45-1.475 with HTT at 250x13 will equal 3250Mhz, 270x13 shouldn't be all that hard either for 3.5Ghz..

I would look at grabbing a cheapo FX4300 though. Get that to 4.5+ and you'll run everything pretty well.

No it isn't a bad board. I have one and it should be fine with a quad core that has no L3 to boot. Still it is only 4+1. So I can't consider it an "overclocking" board imho.

Yea.... But it does the job for mild overclocking with mid-low end parts that OP is using. Kind of unnecessary to buy a $300 board for overclocking if you aren't using high TDP chips, at high clocks, with air cooling.

It's just a waste of money.

EDIT: I'm referring to the extremely expensive 'overclocking' boards.

$300? Where did you pull that number from? This isn't the Intel world where enthusiast boards cost you your first born. You can get a fine AMD overclocking board for $100. My Crosshair V Formula Z only cost $200.
