A little background on my situation:

I recently built a new PC. It is complete excluding a GPU. I was waiting/deciding between the RX 480 and GTX 1060. I was going to order a 1060 yesterday but I ended up winning a RX 480 from AMD on Twitter last weekend. (YaY

I currently own a LG 25UM56P, a 25" 2560x1080 IPS monitor. I really don't like it and have been debating on returning it. Now that I won the AMD RX 480, I want to pick up a 1920x1080 FreeSync monitor. I feel it will be a much better match for the RX 480, given the lower resolution and FreeSync functionality.

So, the monitor(s) I am interested in are of the Samsung CF390 series. They are modestly curved, 1920x1080 displays with FreeSync. There is a 24" and 27" version. That is what I am trying to decide on. Is a 27" display too large for 1920x1080? Should I get the 24" instead and will it "look better"? My new desk isn't super "wide" so I am not positioned too far away from it.

I know there are "better" FreeSync displays in this price range. I could easily pickup a Nixeus or AOC 24" 2ms/144hz monitor for the same price. I am just not a big fan of TN panels. Also, I feel 60FPS is probably more realistic with the RX 480 anyways.

The Samsung monitors are 60hz and the FreeSync range is 27hz-72hz. (I had to contact Samsung to figure out the range) I read a few reviews that stated it overclocks to 72hz very easily with no degradation to image quality/performance.

Disregarding the brand and models, having a larger screen space is so much more satisfying.
Being able to keep the quality of a monitor and not going to a TV is great.
Have you thought about a Korean 1440p monitor? The games you can play at 1440p will look better, and you still play games one 1080p if you're unable to.
Also you could look into a monitor mount regardless with future funds

I agree that a larger screen space is more satisfying most of the time. I am just looking for input if 1920x1080 would be adequate on a 27" display. I am also trying to decide if a 27" display is just too big for my setup / too big for how close I will be sitting to it.

As for the Korean 1440p comment, I am not entirely sure what you mean. I will say that I definitely want an AMD FreeSync compatible display. I also want to run my display at its native resolution, as I feel they look like pure crap when you don't 90% of the time. I would much rather have a nicer 1920x1080 IPS/VA with FreeSync than a knock off 1440P TN. I'm not willing to trade image/color quality and FreeSync for more pixels.

When looking at a Freesync monitor you need to make sure it has the ability to use LFC. AMD has a list of confirmed Freesync monitors along with LFC support. In general the rule of thumb is it if has 144hz then it does LFC.

The current best 24" freesync monitors are made by Nixeus, AOC and Viewsonic. All however are TN. I have seen the Nixeus and AOC in action and they are really good TN panels and great for gaming.

I have been wondering about these two. I am trying to stay away from TN because I have been using IPS for the last 8 years. I have heard that TN displays are much better than they used to be though. Between the Nixeus and AOC which would you prefer?

I've through about 5 different types of screen setups, starting at 3x 21.5 inch Acers, 3x 24 Viewsonic, 3x 24 inch Asus, 3x 24 inch Asus with and Asus 24 inch Asus VG248QE 144hz monitor, to three Qnix 27 inch 1440p monitors.

Each time going up in quality, going from 21.5 to 24. from a normal panel to IPS, then from 24 inch to 27 inch.

I tried using the Asus 144hz monitor for about two weeks until I sold it because I felt there wasn't a change visually for me while playing games.

I had the 3x Asus 24 monitors and 3x Qnix monitors all at the same time and I just loved how much better the Qnix monitors looked.
The Qnix Monitors I have use PLS, which is Samsungs type of IPS display. (The Qnix monitors are Samsung monitors that weren't up to specs for mainstream, I.E. They aren't A+ models, they're B though A quality models.)
They aren't knock off panels, I can even provide the Samsung stickers on the back of my monitor.
As far as down scaling issues, I've only dealt with degradation in quality of when I used a 4k tv, and tried to play on 1080p or 1440p.
The desktop runs at 1440p, while I'd game I'd select 1080p if I can't play it on 1440p.

I've not dealt with G-Sync or Free-Sync so I can't say why you should or shouldn't go with one, I only feel it as a price premium if you cant play a game at the constant 60hz. So I am naive there.

Can you describe better why you don't like the current monitor and do you have a picture of your current layout?

This is my desk/setup. I just bought the desk and I like it. Getting a different desk is not an option. Besides, I wouldn't have room for a desk any wider, as this was already pushing it.

I can't explain exactly why I don't like my current monitor but I just don't. It is too "skinny" and yeah, 21:9 just isn't for me I guess.

Why does taking pictures on my phone and having to hook it up to my computer to put them on and upload them make me want to punch a baby?

That is what I am leaning towards. I am thinking 24" is about the cut off for 1080P and 27" would be best at 1440P. I would be all for a 1440P monitor if I had say a GTX 1070, but not with a RX 480. I don't want to buy a 1440P monitor if I am going to run it at 1080P in half of my games. (Or have to crank the settings down) Seems counterproductive.

I can understand that. I ran the three 1440p monitors with two 780's.
Without a monitor mount, I'd suggest the 24 inch monitor, 27 if you had a mount.
The 1080p monitor will make it to where you wont have to really upgrade in the future, 27 inch monitor looks like it wold be too large for your desk without having a mount. 1440p would be good for the future but still too large for your desk without a mount

For 1080p I prefer 24" or below.

Even when I did have my 27" it was a 1200p so a bit better ppi than 1080p 27".

It's honestly a matter of opinion as everyone views things differently.

I feel 27" and up is 1440p or higher domain for resolution for good ppi and clear image if you're not very far away.
