I'm currently overseas and away from my big rig. I'm going to move back to air cooling when I go back to the US so I'm looking at options right now. I currently have:

Case: Corsair 760T White
CPU: Intel i7 4790K
MB: Asus Maximus VII Hero
RAM: GSkill Trident X 16gb(2x8) DDR3 2133mhz
GPU: ASUS DCUII Nvidia GTX 780
I think the rest don't matter

I'm currently in a debate between Cryorig R1 Ultimate, Cryorig R1 Universal, Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3 Pro, Phanteks PH-TC14PE.
I'm want something that performs well and looks pretty well (hence the absence of Noctuas). Currently unsure of Ram clearance because I know that the Trident X heatsink is tall. I do think I have my RAM on slots 2 and 4 because my mobo/ram/cpu have occasional issues with compatibility but solves itself soon. the DR3P is OOS on Amazon and I found the Cyrorig on sale for 69.99 on Newegg. I think all thee look pretty good but I need to choose one. Which one is the better one for me? THEY ALL LOOK SO GOOD.

Have you looked at Phanteks and Fractal Design cases? Much better built than Corsair are and reasonably priced.

Cryorig is very good, as is Phanteks. be quiet! are not quite as good, but we are talking a couple degrees at most. I love the Cryorig cooler, but am not in love with their fans Their sound is not as pleasant as some others. . The new Phanteks fans sound much better to my ears. My favorite fans are Thermalright TY-14x series fans, current models are TY-147A and TY-143 as well as new TY-147A SQ and TY-143 SQ. Thermalright also make very good coolers, but are not as easy to find.

It is extremely important to optimize case airflow and cooling. It is very common for the component intake air to be 10-20c, and can sometimes be 30+c higher than room, especially when gaming. "Ways to Better Cooling" link in my sig may be of interest. 1st post is index, click on topic to see it. I suggest starting with 5th post.

GSkill Trident X is quite tall, even with taking the removable part of heat spreader off they are still 39mm tall. If you can find similar RAM that is not as tall you will have better airflow over motherboard and into cooler and more versatility in cooler selection.

While the DirectCU II Nvidia GTX 780 is a good GPU, it is now a couple generations old. Thant said, I'm using similar gen with a KFA2 GeForce GTX 770 LTD OC and and even older DirectCU II GTX 580

I already own all the other components. I'm just going back to air from an AIO that gives me quality concerns. as for airflow, I got 2 front intake, 2 top intake and 1 rear exhaust. Since Youtube is blocked in China, I can't really get a rough audio sample of what each sounds like. What sounds do the fans make? I do have sensitive hearing so high pitched noise drives me nuts.

On my r1 universal the thin fan in the front made some sporadic clicking noises, i contacted customer service and they sent me out a new fan and that fixed the noise for me. I thought i was sensitive to noise, but doyll is the king of air cooling and i would take his word over anybodies

Okay, that explains the older generation components.

I use old system myself. Newst is 6700K and GTX 770.

  • Corsiar Graphite 760T is 246 x 564 x 568 mm
  • Phanteks Enthoo Luxe is 235 x 560 x 550 mm (W x H x D)
  • Enthoo Evolv ATX is . . . 235 x 495 x 510 mm
  • Fractal Design Define R5 232 x 451 x 521mm
Enthoo Luxe has 2x bottom filters, PSU slides out back, but can easily be attached to front bottom filter and slide out for cleaning from front . no need to move case to clean filters.
Define R5 is one big filter that slide out the front.

Really, the R1 sounds fine, I'm just spoiled by TY-14x fans. Among reviews who are really honest the TY-14x fans are known as some of the very best for overall airflow and low sound level that is very pleasant to the ear. I almost always have at least one system on open bench testing or just using it. Inside of a case the slight differences are hard to hear, but in the open the TY-14x series are inaudible even a few feet away at 7-800rpm. At 5-6 feet 900-950rpm is inaudible. Above 950rpm I begin to hear a slight hum and ariflow noise. Obviously the sound is different depending on what cooler is used. Different fin and pipe spacing / layout and patterns, fin spacing from fan, etc all cause different sound variations.

Can you buy some of your components while you are overseas and bring them back with you? Might be lower prices.

^ this is a good review. They're all really good air coolers. And you may have to use your judgement on noise vs performance. 1C is very negligible, but try to analyze the heatsink rather than the fans (definitely replaceable in the future).

read the conclusion for a thorough analysis. Sometimes newegg has sales, dropping prices occasionally.Given that the Cryorig R1 is on sale for $70, it's worth a grab.

Personal note: I have both the XT140 and XF140 cryorig fans (wanted the push:pull heatsink configuration for my H5). You actually do notice a humming noise, but that's not a deal breaker. Aesthetics, installation, packaging, support and performance are really high-end on cryorig's part. Bequiet and Phantek are popular brands, too, however, they seem to have awkward installation according to some reviews. Furthermore, Cryorig gives you 6 years warranty versus Bequiet's 3 year warranty and Phantek's 5 year warranty. Acoustic-wise, it seems like Bequiet is the quietest by a couple dBa, while Phantek and Cryorig are about the same. Cryroig wins in performance and would match well with your 760T case though imo.

@bboiprfsr, why did you post the modders inc chart? It is a great example of how ridiculously inept many review sites are .. testing and getting such extreme results that are not even close to established norm, then publishing it with no real explanation of why it is so atypical.

Techpowerup using same model CPU with same overclock under R1 Universal had no problems.

Thermalbench also tested R1 Ultimate on 4770K @ 4.4GHz / 1.25 Vcore with 68.4c w/ 100% fan and 70.5c w/ 50% fan

Your closing statement is right on!

The fans are good fans. Some of us just have differing preferences in sound profile .. or are overindulged with so many fans to choose from we are spoiled.

Sorry if I offended you. The modders inc. is so far out of norm while the others are normal, but you gave no explanation .. so I asked

. So I'm kinda set on getting the Cryorig since $69.99 is the cheapest I've seen for this cooler according to my resources. I'm just debating on the whether I can use the Ultimate because I know my RAM is overly tall and my northbridge is not the smallest thing in the world. Images make the cooler seem huge. Will it fit? I'm pretty sure my case will fit it but mb and ram compatibility, I dont know.

Scythe Fuma, the new air cooling king by the looks of it...its not very tall, so you will need short ram, but it hangs with 240mm radiators, and makes much less noise.

As far as clearance, keep in mind that you can remove the trim piece on the Trident X, so you have no issue.

I have done a number of comparison tests of each of these coolers for articles in the past. On a 4790K, the temp differences between them will be very negligible. If you have sensitive hearing, the Dark Rock Pro 3 should distinctly be your top choice - it is incredibly quiet, and the sound is very smooth. The 14PE is also pretty smooth but a bit louder, while the R1 (in either configuration) will be the loudest and coarsest sounding.

But, to put it in perspective, they are all going to be substantially quieter than the CLC you are replacing.

I still have all of these on hand, and if I were going back to air it would be a tough call, but I would likely go with the DRP3.

ive heard the mounting is horrendous on the be quiet coolers, did they every change it?

It will fit if you either raise the front fan a bit, or remove the trim piece on the stick of Trident X closer to the CPU. It will be under the fan, so you won't see it, anyway.

It isn't horrendous at all.......if you bother to read the instruction manual.....which almost no reviewers did, which led to a ton of users trying to install them wrong. Of course it's difficult to install if you are doing it entirely wrong. If you follow the manual it is very average as far as difficulty.

http://www.overclockers.com/scythe-fuma-heatsink-review/ Fuma is cheap, and with a 3rd Scythe Slipstream fan on it, its competing with an EK Predator (can also benefit from any old fan with high airflow, it needs next to no static pressure), it can also have tall ram installed after reading about it again, its also the smallest dual tower heatsink of the lot.

I had the DRP3 as my first choice but I can't find a vendor in the US that has it in stock or is under 100 hence my other options. I'm really diggin the R1 look and the current price
