I reinstalled windows 8 last week. Just checked and i only have 6gbs left on my 120gb ssd. I have bf4 premium dlc on this drive.

What could be eating up my space? I downloaded windows updates after I reformatted. I dont see anything out of the ordinary

thanks

Can you follow this?

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/zxue/2012/03/08/windows-8-how-to-19-show-hidden-files-folders-and-drives/

After this you should be able to see that windows.old folder.
Just tried and I dont see anything. Nothing in my C drive

This is what I have done so far:
1. Ran disk cleanup
2. Deleted temp/prefect files

I ran disk cleanup and they detected like 800 items that needed to be cleaned up. I'm going to complete that scan when I get back home. Spybot also detects all these temporary files that I have to clean every 3-4- days. Where am I getting all this stuff? Could it really add up to 30+ gb?

appreciate the help

A portion of it could be page file and hibernation(hiberfile.sys).

If you do not use hibernate(or fast startup. With an SSD, you do not need it anyway), You can remove that.

Open the Admin command prompt and type powercfg -h off then hit enter.

You can reduce your page file to a preset size if you wish. I generally use 4096 megabytes.

EDIT.

You may also want to get winddirstat to see your space usage.
Here is a portable edition

it is huge. I downloaded bf4 and I think Dota and had no left over space. I deleted dota/steam and freed about 20 gb. Now all of a sudden my sdd is full

I had about 6 gb last night, and now its down to 5.90

I will try what you guys suggested. Just got home. Ill report back

thank you so much

You can try to reduce the page file to 4096(4gigabytes), but keep an eye out for any signs you need more. Some users remove the page file, I do not personally.

If you do not use hibernation/fast startup use the command powercfg -h off to remove that file and prevent creation of a new one.

winsxs will for the most part have to be left as is. It does grow over time, but I am not sure of a safe way to attempt to clean that folder(windows is supposed to deal with it).

Every system is different. I mean I am sure at least 80 percent of users are fine without it(even more since most users have plenty of memory). Some programs require it and i think you need at least some for memory dumps if you happen to get a BSOD.

Trying without it certainly will not do any actual harm to the system. Worst case it crashes a program or even windows(bsod maybe).

Maybe I will try it some day. I do not generally get blue screen errors so I do not need memory dumps at this point.

this is interesting. Any reason why? I just put in 4096 ass suggested by nuke and everything seems to be running a lot quicker. Sometimes when I boot up itll take a couple of seconds longer for before I can click on a program, but thats about it. I might have to try that later

thanks for all the help man. Cleared up about 10 gbs since last night. I put in 4096 value for the pagefile, and the pc seems to be running really fast. Sometimes though when I boot up it will take a couple of seconds longer before search something in Windows. Like the bar on the right when you move your cursor wont even show up

is that a sign? is there something a a way to check? thanks alot

I have never has that issue(this does not mean it can not happen) with changing the page file size. It may just be a delay that Windows has that was not noticed before. You could test with defaults again to see if it changes anything.

Try using it for a while to ensure you have no other issues(you can even try none like Cakewalk_S has and see how it works for you).

It may also be an idea to reduce the system restore space if you have it enabled and reduce the recycle bin max space if you delete large files that stay in there.

well as they said above, i would suggest downing your pagefiling down to 4096MB-

That same thing happened to me when I had a 60GB way back when for just the OS. Maxed it out fast.

Doing the page filing down and managed everything accordingly, I have 50% space on all drives at all times now, ( i have 2 SSDs and 1 500GB drive for storage )

yea maybe I didnt something else. So far thats the only thing ive noticed from all these changes. Itll take like 3-4 seconds before I can actually click on program. I dont care about that as everything feels so much better. Web pages load up quicker, etc.

"You can try to reduce the page file to 4096(4gigabytes), but keep an eye out for any signs you need more"

what are the signs I should lookt for? and what are some values i can set the pagefile to? like can i set it to 8192?

Noob question.. do you think 4096 is enough for BF4? Should I increase it? im not sure if page file affects game. Just dont want anything holding me back

yea changing it to 4096 really helped. Feels so much better. Its noticable whenever I go online. Really nice

doing everything mentioned here freed up about 10 gbs. Ill take that

thanks for everything. PC is running so much better. This is how I wanted it to perform from the get go

If all goes well, Games should not use the page file.

Even the fastest SSD is slow compared to main memory so everything will try to avoid using it. Some programs do use it, but the list is pretty short.

When computers had much less main memory, un-used data was moved to the page file(when required) to make space for new data and swapped back to ram as needed. This caused a delay, but was better than not being able to open anything else. This is not to say some data is not going to be in the page file either way since it is not a perfect word and the OS knows better than I do

Good to hear its working better. Yea I remember when I first installed by 60GB when they finally came down for a comparible price back in the day ( 150$ for 60GB OCZ agility 2 lol) 24GBs of RAM took all my space and i did the same thing, of a what the heck face. hilarious
