Hi all! Due to a recent lofty (its my loft) makeover I need to consider a new placement for my desk and battlestation. This is a loft, so the walls are skewed and therfore limits my options. Why? The monitors reach the ceiling. If I use a normal office chair, i will reach the ceiling. I also feel hunched over using my old setup. I does not feel relaxed and comfortbale. So I am considering a reclined battlestation. Hear me out.

Vision a reclined, low laid back chair, with keyboard and mouse on lap (on a wooden board). The wooden board is held in place with monitor arm, and can be pushed back. Tripple monitor setup tilted slightly down towards me (around 100 degrees), in a an above manner. And the desk (plywood) that serves as a monitor stand, only has enough place to accommodate all the monitor-stands and computer case. So when sitting down to use the desk. I would drag the tray with keyboard, mouse and mouse mat towards me.

I already own a IKEA Poang chair that is comfortbale and low enough that it would work with the lower screens. It puts me around 20 cm lower than my office chair. I already own monitor arms, that can be used as a retractable keyboard tray if I custom cut a piece of plywood that I screw the monitor arm to.

I am researching whether a reclined desk setup will work. I originally though it would be really bad for ergonomics, but then I came across zero gravity desks. I will never achieve that level of reclinedness, but the idea just looks comfortable. So if you have any input on this or you have tried it. Let me know. Thanks!

Nice drawing. Thanks!

Pretty close to that, except I have the keyboard and mouse in my lap. On a retractable arm.

Like so.

Will you use the table to store things? if not you could just use a VESA arm to mount the monitor to the wall, get a regular flat board or buy one of the already made ones ( lapdog ) I think they are called. But buying a regular wooden board is way cheaper and does the same thing, the board you just makes mount for on the chair ( not permanment ones ) but so it sits a bit over your legs and more sturdy.

Then depending on the arm you buy for the monitor you can be as reclined as you want pretty much, I cant really draw it but I hope my explaining is enough

There is a couple of reasons why I need the table. 1. Cable management. 2) store the computer itself (Fractal Node 304), and support for 3 monitors. That is why I am not looking at a VESA solution.

Hehe, yes, the lapdog is crazy prized. Id rather take several trips ot the hardware store than to buy one of those.

Ah, alright.

So to not have the computer fall off you also need to anchor it down somehow, how much does the computer weight? And I know you want the table but this might give some inspiration as to what I sort of was mentioning

I understand this is probably way overkill what you want to do, but maybe it give you some idea or inspiration, the green wall where everything is mounted could probably be done in a much much nicer way

..
Thanks! Yes, this gives a pretty nice picture of what I want to do. Except Linus is WAY overdoing it compaired to my setup, skills and available resources.

The pc and screens will be just tilted a few degrees downwords, and will hopefully not be needing ancors.

To night I will try the keyboard and mouse on the lap, with my screens above me. So I can see if that works in a ergonmic sense for me.

This is only the lap thing. The desk and real work will come after I am done with the loft. I just needed som PC time today. I have prototyped the keyboard and mouse holder for my lap. I have an Overwatch mousemat that I wanted to fit on the board. The mat is around 90cm x 30cm, the board around 100cm x 40cm. I also measured around my beer belly and made the cut out so that my ablows would have as much support as possible.

Started with this:

Cut out:

Mouse and keyboard fit.

Look at the way it wraps around my perfeclty scupled gamer body.

Not enough elbow room. Need to extend final version around 10 cm in this area.

Oh man, i'd pay someone big time for a desk like this.

Makes me think of that desk the guy from Grandma's Boy had LOL

Been trying the lap setup for some time now and realize there are a number of modifications I have to make if this setup is to be a feasable desk.

Firstly I need more elbow support. I get pains in lower arms and elbows after a short while. This is easily done in the next version or plywood cutout, just by adding around 12 cm (4.7") to the arm rests.

Secondly, I need something that holds the lap board up and dispensed in air. Now, getting up from the chair is too cumbersome. I have to lift the board away and place it on the table in front of me. A solution that will not work in the future since I am aiming for a desk that is thin (only space for the monitor feet). I was thinking of using the Monitor arm to keep the board dispenses in mid air, but I believe the plywood cutout is too heavy. I may need to look into a peice of plywood, or something stiff and light, that I can use as a lap board.

Third, I need to focus on cable management on the final version. The cables for the mouse and keybaord needs to be watched so they dont get clamped in the arm.

And lastly, I need to have some sort of cushioning beneath the board, ideally memory foam or something like that.

12 cm more elbow room here.

Potential arm suspense mechanism, dont think its solid enough.

Just wanted to post an update. I have canceled the project for a number of reasons.
  1. I was not able to extend the keyboard and mouse tray in a good way. It was too heavy and the monitor arm was not strong enough. This could have been done with some modding, but then again I would have to buy even more stuff.
  2. I was not able to get a comfortable sitting situation with the reclined chair, even with the custom lap mount. I got aces in my elbows.
At my office, I sit at at a IKEA Bekant desk, that works perfectly. I will have to see if that fits in my home office. Thanks for all your replies and help.
