Found an old PC from when I was a little kid that is capable of running windows 98. I installed windows 98 SE and got my graphics drivers working for the GeForce 2 GTS with 64MB VRAM and was able to get chipset drivers. I could not get any PCI devices to work however. My sound card nor my integrated audio work nor does my LAN card. I plugged in some logitech USB headset I have and it actually installed the driver and the little sound icon popped up in the task bar. I go to adjust volume and the second the sound plays through the headset instead BSOD. If I reboot with headset in BSOD. Unplugged no problem. I know that WIndows 98 is super old but maybe figured I would take a shot in the dark here and see if anyone else has had these issues in the past 18 years lol.

AMD Sempron 2400+ at 1.67 GHz
VIA KM266pro mobo
512MB RAM
Winfast GeForce 2 GTS 64MB
Soundblaster Live

What chipset drivers did you install?

Have you made sure there isn't any memory instability that could be causing issues?

seems like IRQ issue, you have to go into BIOS and manually give each device a different IRQ channel so it doesn't crash or try to see if PnP is enabled in the BIOS.

Join the real world and upgrade it to Win XP. ?

Also a possibility.

I'd recommend downloading the manual for the board and seeing how the slots assign IRQs and what options there are to configure them.

Inferior DOS support and some games of the era perform considerably worse on XP than on 98.

I remember the original Dungeon Siege running about 80% faster in 98SE than XP, all other things being equal.

This is my main reason for wanting 98 plus its the nostalgia. And now that I have PLUS! 98 installed it makes it all the more exciting. Ill look into this IRQ thing I have never heard of it. I have been into building PC after 2007 or so and I never recall that term. Also I believe I installed Biostar drivers or something to that affect. It was for my chipset though and after it there is less in the "unkown devices" section of device manager.

I fixed the problem with the sound blaster. Headset and onboard audio still don't work but I had to copy and paste the driver exe from the cd to the desktop so it could create a directory. I kept trying to launch the EXE from the disc. Sound works great now.

Gosh, I remember as a kid looking through the Win98 insall CD and finding game demo installs. Midtown Madness anyone? The only game demo I can remember who's input cheat codes worked. OH THE OLD DAYS!

Yeah dude! I remember a demo, not on the win98 cd, but from somewhere free, called Dominion Beta. It was an RTS, and very fun! I played that demo so much! I haven't been able to find that game on ebay or anything...:/

What about that? Seems close. 1998, looks like RTS from back screenshots. Hopefully the title is familiar or something...

Nice, there you go man... Now you can actually play the game you've wanted to for eons. Even tho they want $20 for a game with a $3.00 sticker on it, lol

I don't think anything beats tweaking expanded memory to get Ultima 7 to run in native DOS

, with full sound blaster sound effects AND music. Something millennials will never experience.

Hehe, even now I can't bring myself to get it for that much, lol! Maybe I will let the past be the past, but I will at least message the guy.
