Does anyone know if there are plans to release a UHD Blu-Ray drive for PC's? I haven't been able to find anything about it online, other than people claiming it's the same as a standard Blu-Ray drive.

Most blu-ray drives support BD XL (TL/QL) disks used for UHD BD movies. The issue is that currently there is no way to play these disks on a PC, since no software supports the encryption used on them (AACS 2.0).

That's what I have been reading, although most of the posts about this topic are from 6-12 months ago. I was hoping something had been released by now.

There's been talk of the most recent LG blu-ray drive (BH16NS40, I believe) supporting the format of UHD-BDs, but as the others here have pointed out, the real struggle is not physically reading the disc, but decoding it and displaying a movie properly.

Once I get a 4K TV set up in a couple of months, playing an UHD-BD from my HTPC will be my goal. I'll try to publicize what I find, but it won't be for a little while.

I still get all of my content in 720p for my 1080p cheapo tv. Hasn't let me down yet. Had that TV since 2008.

Hi everyone, so if I get a new LGA 1151 motherboard and a 7 gen i5 or i7 processor for my htpc, I should be good to go for the 4k blurays, right? I have a RX 460 amd video card already that has all the specs to support 4k. Along with the new Pioneer 4k drive of course. What am I missing? Thanks.

You need to buy software that supports the DRM. Maybe PowerDVD?... I'm not sure, but I know it won't play with regular players.

You also can't use your RX 460. You have to use the display output on your motherboard.

It also needs internet access for playback.

Hey y'all, I was able to purchase a new motherboard and processor that will play the 4k bluray software. Now my 4k mkv files are choppy. They played fine using my XFX Rx-460 card I got a 3.4 ghz CPU. I'm not sure if I need mess with the settings in the Bios or I need a 4.2 ghz processor.

In theory, 4k playback should be hardware accelerated, and not need the CPU at all.

What software are you using to play the raw files? You don't need a DRM-compatible video player for those raw mkv files, btw.

First give MPV a shot, see if it performs any better.

It's possible that those 4K MKVs you have are encoded wierdly. If MPV doesn't work, run Mediainfo on them and paste the results here.

Yes, it is very sluggish and I had to turn down a lot of the shade affect or shadow. I just think it could be the processor is just not enough for the game. I ran it for years on an amd gpu and it ran good for the most part. I will try the mpv files conversion and see how the files do. Thanks.
