After looking I thought the blacks only had the 3 as well

Looks like they all have a 5 year but the blue?

edit - and from what i've seen past 4 tb they don't have substantively different fail rates between the various drives

my seagate was great value but it's loud. Depends on what you want. IMO it's all about noise (*and read speeds but I don't worry about that for my use) and the rest is just a lottery.

sorry it has taken so long to come to a conclusion,BUT I found that WD gold series is good for small size data write and not big size data write.
The drive seems to have a much lower idle and load temp when seeking is done, but the drive is also not best for desktop use it seems. Tho it seems its a really good drive, its not as good as wd black, but it is very close. But if I ever want a bigger drive than 6tb the 8tb wd gold seems to best drive.
I might try out a gold to see how it fares against the black hdd's I have internally already.

Based on OCN's resident data recovery specialist's esperiences, it would be safer to limit yourself to drives no larger than 6TB.

and who is this mythical person who is supposdely resident recovery specialist? and why is it safter with 6tb? do you actually mean that air is less prone to failure than Helium based hdd's are?
I'm planning my future NAS to have 8tb and upgrade to 10tb wd red in future.

OOPSIE! Sorry! I forgot to mention it is Lord Xeb (I also spelled "finish" as "fish" in another thread; I need to go back to bed
rolleyes.gif
). Here is a thread where he discusses the rash of failed larger capacity HDDs he has been getting in.

As an owner of many flawless 6TB blacks that is where I would put my money.

That or take the gamble with gold and let us know how they work out for you.

I'll read it tomorrow. I find it kinda weird that getting above 6tb will degrade your hdd, this is the first time I have ever heard about this, so im guessing this included reds aswell.
There has to be study about this problem, if not its just bad luck. I guess ill find out when I read it tomorrow.
Spelling a word wrong is something that everyone does so,dont worry about it.

I current have 3x 6tb wd black in my pc and my hdd's dissapears in UEFI,POST and in windows when I reboot/hotboot/coldboot. I havent found the source of the problem yet.
I dont understsand why WD hasnt made black in 8tb yet,but the black hdd's are really awesome, but 6tb gets filled fast.

I'm not well versed in the much larger drives, but I am seeing some 3TB versions of Seagate/WD starting around $90. 6TB Barracuda at about $210
Late chiming in here but I've run full 1080p movies on my Plex server for years with Western Digital Greens which are 5400-5900.

If all you're doing is storing, get something more power/heat efficient.

yeah,I know. And ssd is nothing compared to nvme m.2 speed.
Thing is tho that ssd is just too expensive for 1tb or 2tb capacity, and even 2tb ssd is not much storage for movies/tv shows.

I'm gonna qoute you again, thanks for the heads up towards He base hdd's. I was unaware of this issue regarding He based hdd's, I had to do some research about this and I concluded that I will not risk He based hdd's in my rig or using 8tb red in a NAS enclosure and I will stick with air hdd's.

I don't know how old this thread is, but I stumble upon it while I was searching for reviews on WD 6TB Gold vs WD 6TB Blacks.
I have 4x 6TB Blacks in my system and for a long time (5monnths ) I couldn't figure out why randomly my HDDs were disconnecting, especially while putting system to sleep mode or rebooting.
If you use Intel's RST more likely that is the reason. I have try few dozen times over the months and that is what causing the disconnections in my system. I don't use raid so I don't need IRST and ever since no issues.
For the heck of it, after 2 months I installed it again and after few reboots it started again, so in my case is the IRST, if you using it thou

Also, its only the issue on Win7 I have try on Win10 no problem

thanks for shedding some light on this issue. I actually cant tell apart if RAID is activated in eufi or not. I have installled the IRST driver in windows 10, so I never have experienced this problem in win7. I always thought this was a volt issue either on the sata controlller or the VRM on the mobo or PSU or any combination of these.
Luckily I have gotten it stable now,I havent got the problem in months now due reinserting 2 RAM sticks after the usual 2hours reboot, coldboot, hotboot sequence.
I also have 4x6TB wd blacks connected, and I intend on buying and installing 11 6tb wd blacks on my mobo eventually.
I have never either used RAID onboard because this could very easily break the raid array if something were to happen, like sending in a mobo or that its not necessery to use RAID in my main rig, but on a server this could be helpful.

Thanks for responding.

I stumbled upon this thread because I was in search for exactly the same information that you were some time ago.

I have multiple systems but my main home server is the data collection that gets data from my wifes numerous systems throughout few cities every 3 days and trust me it's a lot of data approx. 40-60TB, afterword's all that is highly compressed and stored on my home cloud for the next 10 years for easy accesses from her offices.

Anyhow..I have 6x 6TB WD Blacks and I want to get additional 2 of either 6TB Blacks or 6TB Gold I will never get another Helium again.

Anyways, so I wasn't sure if there is any benefit from getting Gold since they are a bit chipper now but I also have used Blacks for years and not 1 have ever failed so I was still reluctant on getting Gold unless someone would convince me otherwise.

All of my HDDs are only for storage I don't care about the speed but reliability is my #1 priority and yes I could get away with 6TB blue's but after years of using only Blacks and Velociraptors I know I will be more safe from losing or corrupting data, there are no guaranties, but again I have more confidence in something that I have used for over 2 decades and haven't yet to fail.

So after some research I got additional 2x 6TB Blacks and this should last me for a long time until big capacity SSD's are affordable, it might take few years but I don't mind HDD's for now

While better quality drives are more likely to keep your data safer, even the best drives are still subject to sudden, unrecoverable failure, including brand new drives (I've occasionally received them DOA). The only way to reasonably ensure your data is safe is for it to exist in at least three different places, most typically on the computer, on an onsite backup, and on an offsite backup.

No doubt HDDs are unpredictable, ticking bomb, they can fail at any given time. I member long...long time ago drive took everything with what was in it and I couldn't recover anything but we talking probably over 20 years ago, ever since i learn my lesson

I have to say, over the past probably 20 years I have been very lucky, no drive failed, lets hope I don't jinx it today

its a weird problem isnt it!.
Can I ask why you say you never getting a helium drive again? I'm going to buy 8x6TB wd reds fro my NAS in RAID6 and eventually it will run out of space so I was thinking like 8TB wed red some time in the future.

I will also buy a new 6TB wd black starting of next year or so.

You know what? I dont mind hdd's either, hehe

Sorry for late reply, got busy

I've always used WD HDD's and before SSD's, Velociraptors were my system drives and they have never failed me I still have 5x 1TB VR that are filed with data now, they are been put away I only start them from time to time, maybe every 12 months or so, they are about 8-10 years old and not 1 have single bad sector.

Going of topic..... I got 4x 6TB Blacks and at the time they were the biggest capacity mechanical drives, than the 8TB Helium came out and right after that the 10TB in which I got 2 of them. At first they would run nice and cooler than my Blacks, noise level was the same but that was no big deal I always set my drives to turn off after 5 minutes, but after 2-3 days I know this they would sound much louder and making strange noise, at first was only one than day apart both where doing that.

As I said I don't care about the speed and noise but the worst part was that after week the speed of both of them dropped to half and noise became an issue.

My theory is that the Helium will leak sooner or later, it's like water, in sealed system once it find its way through crack, even the smallest crevasses it will go all the way, just a matter of time.

Canada's WD RMA department was awful, they are not the same that they were few years ago, even if your drive is week old, they will send you recertified drive over and over again for the duration of your warranty.

When I spoke with the supervisor and asked him about 30 day policy of getting brand new drive, he was trying to dance around the subject I understand if the drive is past the 30 days but that was one awful experience.

I am heavy user of HDDs and unfortunately there isn't much choices for now and as I said the Blacks have served me well for over 2 decades, but as soon as there is something better by different manufactures I won't hesitate to give them my business I am quite turned off by WD warranty tactics, it's all good on the paper, look at Canada Computers for my review I said my piece,

I have used Samsung SSDs for a few years now I have 2x 4T that are tortured on daily bases I override them with my windows Images over again, one of them has actually over 1100 write cycles and it's still in 100% health.

I hope Samsung will come up with big and affordable SSD but don't get me wrong I still love my 6TB Blacks and I think the 6TB are still the latest best conventional drives before jumping to Helium, which in my opinion are not that good.

Put it this way, traditional HDD e.g. Black has 5 year warranty, but with my experience they last 5 years and up, Helium has 5 years warranty and once the helium vanishes grrrrrr I don't think you can do much.

If you have the means and need the storage I would get the 6TB while they are still available I would not trust Helium........

Thanks for the long and detailed reply regarding the Helium drives.
Its basically what I found out myself, that they were gonna leak Helium over time and I were to use them in NAS,everyone I bought the same day would fail almost the same day and i would loose the data in the array. But thanks for convincing me off staying with mechanical drives.
I also want reliablity and speed, so black is the only option for me for quick access of tv shows and movies, I need alot more 6TB wd black tho. I'm actually in need of a new 6TB wd black coming 2018 due to I try and find remux movies which has the best bitrate and true FHD resolution, but they take up space and I think I need another 6TB black for that.

I hope the manufactorers will eventually find a new platter density technology that doesnt include Helium and above 6TB.

I didn't think I would. but I went and got myself WD 6TB Gold HDD. My original plan was to get 2 more blacks sometimes later on, but I couldn't help myself, I love mechanical drives I will get another one tomorrow and I'm all set for a long while
biggrin.gif

This drive runs slightly cooler 5-6C degree which is nice, sound level is pretty much the same but again I set them to be turned off after 5 min so that part wouldn't matter.

Speed wise its on pair with black, but again I don't care about the speed, reliability its #1 of importants.
