Good morning all. I have been trying to find the answer to a question I have but have not been successful. I am building a new system using an Asus Maximus XI Extreme and a 9900K with dual 1TB Samsung 970 Evo’s in RAID 0. This is my first build that has this fancy new Dimm.2 slot and I am confused by what I read online and in the user manual. On to the question.

I have read that it’s better to use the Dimm.2 slots to mount the nvme drives due to the built in heat spreaders as opposed to mounting them on the mobo slots. However, I think I also saw that using the dimm.2 will share PCIE lanes with the GPU slot limiting it to 8x speeds. Obviously this is less than ideal if it is the case. Can someone clarify where the best place is to install the nvme drives so that I don’t loose speed on my GPU? I have tried accessing the Asus forums but every time I go there I get stuck in a endless log in loop of typing in my login info and the captcha info which is put it correctly but always comes back as incorrect. Thanks.

Hello,
You can install up to 2 nvme drivers under the PCH block. Please note that the screws are known to strip very easily ... I experienced it myself

You also need to see what more critical for you : raid speed or GPU. On this platform you can't have both (limited CPU PCIe lanes)

I’m sorry, I should have been more clear. Is there some configuration where I have a functional raid array and my GPU at 16x? Or am I limited to one NVME? I could probably return the 2 NVME drives and get one larger drive if absolutely necessary.

My current rig is running a 7700K, 2 960 Pro NVME drives in Raid 0, with 2 1080ti’s in SLI so I figured something similar would be possible with Z390. Granted the GPUs are at 8x in this build.

Yes this is the solution I've given (raid via PCH). It doesn't touch the x16 on the GPU
You can safely do a raid on this 2 connectors and not worry about the GPU speed :)

Okay. Just to be clear, do not use the Dimm.2. I apologize for sounding dense. Just want to be sure. :)
Eh, don't worry about that here ;)

Yes, don't use Dimm.2. And be careful with the screws, they use very tight loctite ! The M11E is an awesome board, have fun with it
