I am waiting for a Define R6. After reading on this forum I have decided to replace the stock fans.

So now I am wondering if I should go for 3x120mm or 2x140mm in front and if it is needed to add fans to top/bottom and back. Also, what fans is recommended to use?

The case will be filled with 8x3.5" drives and 4xSSD drives, so I want a proper cooling setup without to much noice.

Depending on the brand of the fans. Some 140mm fans e.g. Corsair make humming sound opposed to their 120mm that are quieter, but that's just one brand for example.

over the years I have try # of brand e.g. Corsair, Gelid, Cooler Master, GentleTyphoon and other but making long story short and I can't emphasize enough on how great Noctua's 120mm fans are, this is my pick and I have ton of them and now they are the only fans I would use.

Case fans: NF-S12A PWM chromax.black.swap they are absolutely awsom.
For rads: NF-F12 PWM chromax.black.swap superior quality and dead silent

Go for two 140 intakes. The hubs are dead spots and the 120s need to spin faster/be noisier to move the same amount of air since they're smaller.

I've got 2 Noctua NF-A14 iPPC-3000 intake and 4 Phanteks PH F140 XP as exhaust. Not a cheap fan setup but it's basically silent and cools well.

I run the Industrials in pull on my radiator in the front of my case at 20% until the CPU hits 70c and then they go to 33% and the Phanteks fans stay at a fixed 65%.

Basic rule of thumb is 2x 140mm fans will flow about the same amount of air as 3x 120mm fans of same style. Phanteks PH-F140MP are quite good but not as good as be quiet! Silent Wings 3. But SW3 are very expensive while PH-F140MP on special in 2-pacs for about $20.00.

Basically you want fans with higher static pressure rating to overcome the resistance of grills, filters, HDD cages, etc. In R6 I like using 2x front and 1x bottom intakes and remove all back PCIe slot covers to improve front to back airflow around GPU and thus lower airflow temps to both CPU and GPU cooler intakes.

Is there a similar fan to those in 140mm? based on the other answeres here it looks like 2x140 in front is the way to go. These will do well with the dustfilter on R6?

The Phanteks PH-F140MP is not avaliable in bundles where I live and they cost around 23ÂŁ a pice. Shippment for the bundle from Overclockers GB is around 35ÂŁ so these will actuallt be the most expensive one.

It is for my server build, so I really need all 10 drives to hold a nice temp so it is important that all of them benefits from my setup of 3x120mm or 2x140mm in front.

Here are some fans that are avaliable where I live and at what cost. They probably do a great job no matther which one i pick out of them, or is any of them a no go for my setup?

- Phanteks PH-F140MP 21ÂŁ
- Noctua NF-A14 chromax 24ÂŁ
- Noctua NF-A14 22ÂŁ
- Be Quiet! Silent Wings 3 PWM 140mm 22ÂŁ
- Be Quiet! Silent Wings 3 High PWM 140mm 23ÂŁ
- Noctua NF-A14 industrialPPC-3000 PWM 140mm 27ÂŁ

Any will be fine.

For the Phanteks fans, MP ≥ XP > SP.

XP has slightly higher CFM with slightly less static pressure than the MP.

be quiet! Silent Wings 3 High PWM 140mm would be my choice from your list.

Thank you.

If none of them stands out as a "best" pick I will buy Noctua NF-A14 chromax or Be Quiet! Silent Wings 3 PWM 140mm. They are sold where I get free shipping, so that is around 20ÂŁ saved compared to the other models.

I have several of these: NF-A14 PWM chromax.black.swap

Again, they are superior performers, built quality is outstanding, the blades, the whole fan construction is very rigid and they are unbelievably quiet .

My son have them on his NH D15S to cool his 6950X and I'm telling you, if I didn't have to cool several of my bloody hot GPU's (4Titans) I would switch to Noctual all together, CPU cooler and all their fans.

Noctuas fans are one of those things that I can say with full confidence ...they are worth every penny.

Also, one very important aspect of all Noctuas products, their customer support is beyond exceptional, they are excellent at keeping their customers happy.

lol, we get it, you like Noctua fans :)

Yes, in fact I do:) but it wasn't always like that. I was quite oppose to Noctua due to their price and over hype by many users until I have tried them myself:)

Also, are you the one need help deciding on fans, otherwise what's your irritation, to expensive on your packet:)

I am not to familiar with R6, only from pictures.

What hubs are dead spots? Will 2x140 cover all 10 3.5" drives?

Saw this picture with 3x120mm and it looks like it will cover all drives from top to bottom, while 2x140mm fans dont cover the drives at the bottom?

Either will cover all HDD's but removing bottom shroud is necessary.

My nephew just got R6 for home server. Its small enough case, yet it has the ability to contain so many HDD's, I'm heavy user of mechanical HDD's, this might be my next pick as well.

the hub of the fan is the dead spot. every fan has one, and 120s have more (3v2) than 140s. more of the fan is a dead spot on 120s since the hubs are the same size and the fan is smaller. that gives 120s (generally) better static pressure but worse CFM.

the front part of the PSU shroud is removable, you need to remove it to mount 3x 120s. You can also remove it and slide the 140s down.

though the airflow difference from 3 120s vs 2 140s is going to minuscule, run whatever you want. two 140s will be quieter at the same airflow and cheaper though.

I see. I have to remove that anyway to fit 10 drives dont I? And if I want to add a intake fan at the bottom? It looks like it is a "closed system" at the bottom with the psu shroud on, so that will just prevent intake from bottom to reach the rest of the case?

Thanks for all the help, should looking forward to getting it all setup now :)

Yeah, you need to remove it for the extra drive cages.

If you can get SW3s for the same price as the Noctuas or Phanteks, you take the SW3s every time.

lol my friend, I have 5 Industrial PPC's in my closet, attached to a pair of 240 and 360 XT45 radiators. I know of Noctua all too well.
Currently running all Fractal Design fans on my R6 Blackout. I'd have to say that the HP-12s are extremely comparable to the Noctua line up for less.
I'm just poking some harmless internet fun.

What ciarlatano said, SW3 are best and if all are similar prices I would get them.
