To all:
Just curious, Gigabyte offers MOBOs with 4 RAM-slots with "16GB dual channel capacity"
Anyone even seen any 4GB sticks???

If Gigabyte are (were) trying to future proof ther Mobos as a selling point? Are they hoping that 4GB sticks are (were ) something for down the road?
And now the development will have been deep sixed as DDR3 is coming up? Kinda how s939 got dumped "just out the gate" as "future of computing" with AMD's change to AM2!
Just curious!
Cheers

IMHO it is completely useless to have that much ram... unless you're running it in a server. well either way, they do make a stick that's 4gb... I only found one though....it's this Corsair. The only two problems though is that it's DDR and really spendy...

Absolutely, there is no point in 16 gigs of RAM. Unless you plan to have a superclocked QX6850 and 4x8800 Ultras and Run 13-14 instances of FEAR or BIOSHOCK at the same time.

Sure, server motherboards can have like 16 DIMM slots.

Yea in the intel V8
I think that required buffered memory though (server memorY)

Yeah, I mean I can tell you that some servers at my college have like 64GB of RAM, but of course we are implicitly talking about desktops here.

Sure there is... All you have to do is sit multiple computers up next to each other and then you're good to go... there's 8 slots...

As for on one mobo... I am not sure, again, that would be pretty pointless also, unless for a server...

Edit: ok, so there are mobo's with way more than just 8 slots.

Gee is that a server board

Original Post was not regarding the availability of boards with more than 4 slots (Yah!! server boards
Image
) or the feasability/ validity of needing 16GB of RAM (at this time
Image
)
Merely:
Had anybody seen sticks of 4GB DDR2????

Cheers

In a desktop there is no need for 16Gb of RAM...period. In fact most chipsets don't even support that much memory......

I was jus' tryin' to get back to original question!
Bless you Orion! thanks for the link.

Any one else? Any other ones?
Cheers

Why bother with 4GB? With the 16GB sticks that Micron is offering, you can pack 64GB in machines with only 4 slots.

just because the board supports that much ram doesnt mean its really ment to happen today.. but in 2 yrs it will be upgradable to what is available then.

apparently someone doesnt do homework very good..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit

so says for the lazy people like me out there..

Quote:
The emergence of the 64-bit architecture effectively increases the memory ceiling to 264 addresses, equivalent to 17,179,869,184 gigabytes or 16 exabytes of RAM.
love to see what PC can max that out.....
