Much better than their ugly brown colors. Glad they're doing this. Not that I'm gonna buy any cooler anytime soon...

This is long past about time. Noctua has a habit of promising something, then taking their sweet time delivering. Look at how long it took for Noctua to deliver the Chromax covers after first introducing at one of the trade shows (and introducing it again...). Linus did a review at

I won't be buying one any time soon since I already have a perfectly good (and better fitting) silver colored ND-15s Noctua cooler dressed up with black Chromax covers and fan.

Let me know when they make a single fan NH-U12A in black (currently have NH-U14S with chromax fan + NH-D14 + TS 140 Power so anything else is a step down). Otherwise this is just milking their older coolers with a different color. For the price added there could have been NT-H2 compound for example.
The NH-U12S is not worthy of being the price it is, the NH-D15 still has clearance issues with RAM.

I saw a review and it pretty much said the black d15 didn’t perform as well as the original while the other black one performed slightly better than the original. Not sure what the coating is, but I don’t need one so I’ll pass. I was hoping for an extra heatpipe but I guess they are satisfied with 6. I wonder if they have played with larger diameter pipes. Seems like only a few have used 8mm pipes. I wonder if it’s a bit tougher getting a good coldplate with larger pipes than 6mm.

With all the variables involved in testing cooler performance like how well the cooler mates to IHS, air temp into cooler, differences in fan speed, etc. can easily account for a few degrees.
I'm guessing the coating is not effecting cooling any or enough to measure. Differnce in temps caused by how well cooler base mates to IHS will be much greater than coating vs no coating. Keep in mind tea- kettles are usually have polished finishes to keep heat in better and heating stoves usually have matt /dull finishes to radiate heat better.

So, a $10 premium because its black? At $50 I think I'll pass.
I built a SFF for work using the I3 9100. I used the stock cooler because I was waiting for the chromax L9I. The regular L9I was regularly on sale for around $35 I think? I can't hear the stock cooler over my work environment, and the highest temps I've recorded are mid 60's celsius with 90 plus farenheit ambient.
I did use NT-H1 for paste instead of the pre-applied stuff. Maybe that helped.

The D15 does come with 1500 RPM fans vs 1200 RPM fans on the normal version, not sure why they are different but for any variance that could be part of the reason why.

They concluded that the difference was due to differences in fan speeds and that the coolers itself where within margin of error of each other. So the coating most likely doesn't make a difference.
That is pretty weird, why is one with chromax "A15 HS" model but normal one comes with identically named but different spec "A15" fans?

All Noctua coolers using 140mm fans (NH-D15 and NH-D15 chromax.black, NH-U14S & NH-U14S TR4-SP3) come with 1500rpm version of NF-A15 PWM or NF-A15 PWM chromax.black fans. Both NF-A15 PWM and NF-A15 PWM chromax.black supplied on coolers are 1500rpm fans.
But retail version of NF-A15 is 1200rpm .. So if you want a 1500rpm NF-A15 fan you have to buy a cooler to get it. Noctua might sell one to consumer who owns a cooler that came with NF-A15 1500rpm fans if cooler is out of warranty, but I know they won't sell them to NH-D15S or NH-U14S owners because I know owners who have to get NF-A15 PWM 1500rpm fans and couldn't.
