So I need to create a bootable USB just for this driver, enter UEFI shell mode, and I think there might be more commands I need to type to install the driver?

I am too dumb for shell mode / command prompt stuff.

Installing the driver normally = no internet connection so I need to try and see if this works, and also wait for the next driver from Intel which is announced but still being fixed.

Why would you need to run some kind of firmware installer outside of windows to get a driver installed? That is not how it works.
What's the brand name of the motherboard we are talking about here. Please give us this information so we can assist you with installing this LAN driver
Its MSI and thats what their support told me to do?

Normal installation already tried multiple times, lan port doesn't work.

We will also need to model of the msi board your have. If you know the brand and model of the ethernet card that would be useful aswell. Intel or Broadcom then its model.

Try this. Its an Intel ethernet driver from intel's site.

That is what I'm waiting for, its not the driver yet, its the change notice.

Intel support won't send me the version they took down.

MSI Z790 Tomahawk, in built ethernet port, Intel I226-V.

Here, has driver download on site. Done.

So download 27.7 instead of 27.8. Your NIC chipset was released 5 months before version 27.7 came out so it should have driver support. MSI looks to be offering 27.6 as their officially supported version for the board.

Please try reading the OP:

'Installing the driver normally = no internet connection'

Also the 27.7 driver doesn't list I226-V as a supported device.

Now does anyone actually know how I do what the email from MSI support says to do?

thats why we offered alternative driver options. you made no mention of trying a drive direct from intel vs the driver msi provides.. But a google search of "uefi shell mode" first result has your answer

Is nobody reading the OP? edit: nvm 420Assassin already linked.

Support is likely asking you to do diagnosis, they're asking you to boot into UEFI shell mode and execute that script/instructions and take a picture or record the information they're asking for in that 'image3' attachment.

They're not asking you to install anything. The USB drive can be any flash drive in FA16/FAT32 and the file they're asking you to download is the shell script to run.

You'll need to find out how to enter shell mode, can start with articles like this:

Edit:
I've read that some Gigabyte motherboards have to be hardwired when installing Windows to install LAN drivers.
Yes my x570 aorus elite wifi I211 will not connect if cable is plugged in after boot (i.e. not plugged in at start). Reboot with it plugged in fixes it.

My board was hardwired initially when installing windows, I had to then unplug the cable from the switch to get wireless to work before I could reactivate my login.

I'm going to wait for 27.8 drivers first before trying the UEFI thing.

Send it back for a refund. That sort of this is not something a customer should have to do.
RMA
NVM I got it working.

I t works when plugged into either the router's 1 gbit or QNAP switch 10 gbit ports, but not when plugged in any of the 2.5 gbit ports.

No clue why that would be.

do you have a switch or another device that uses a 2.5G port. It's possible is the other device doesn't support 2.5 but if that was the case it should fail back to 1G and work fine.

All devices on the network support 2.5, which is why I don't get why it doesn't work in the 2.5 port but does work in either 1 or 10 ports.

i would still say try the drivers from intel's site see if they work better.
After that you could try manually setting the duplex for the network adapter see if that does anything. but ya is an odd one. But seems like a driver related issue to me.

I'm already using 27.7!
