Good day Overclockers
I know there is no such thing as a forever PC, but one can try. I am asking your advice on a build that will last me 10 Years, with RAM and GPU upgrades after 5 Years.
What I am currently running:
Intel i5 2500K @4.2gHz,
Asus Maximus IV Extreme RevB
Asus GTX970 Strix(Before strix became ROG),
Kingston Beast DDR3 8GB @ 2133mHz,
Samsung 840 256gb SSD (OS)
Antec High Current Gamer 850W Bronze PSU
Coolermaster Enforcer Chassis.
I built above mentioned system in 2011, upgrading my GPU to the GTX970, RAM and SSD in 2014. I've been running a stable 4.2gHz on my 2500K since 2017 on a cheap Coolermaster 212 Hyper I also baught in 2014. With good maintenance, my build lasted me almost 12years. She started showing her age with the release of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and I've had to start dailing down my settings. With each year's new release, the settings are getting turned down even further. I am at the stage where my games are starting to look like a Playstation or XBox
. And so the time has come to lay this old girl to rest. A sad day indeed.
But with the retirement of a old veteran, there is a space made available for a newcommer in the family entertainment squad.
I've done a lot of research. And I am stuck. I don't have a budget that will not allow a new build every 2-3years(atleast for the next 3years). I've been saving ever so slowly since Shadow of the Tomb Raider reared her pretty face... Wanting to see it in all its splendor.
The time has come to get some a new PC, and the excitement is massive. Alas, I never buy someting on impulse, there is always research, lots of research. I am a fanboy of my wallet and how far each Rand(South African Currency) can stretch, and what is the best value for money. So with above mentioned statement:"And I am stuck", here is where I am at:
1. AMD System, wich will support AM5 until 2025, with a cheaper CPU now, 7600 non X when it releases, and when the final itteration of AM5 launches, get a X3D version of the best CPU then. Mounted on the great motherboard I buy with the non X Ryzen 5.
2. Get the best Intel has to offer on the Z790 system. And hope for the same value as SandyBridge(Years wise, nothing will beat SandyBridge for value, lets be honest).
I will most likely upgrade the RAM, GPU and storage 5 years after the intial build. Depending on how the GPU performs when Half Life 3 releases🤞.
With all the experience I've accumulated over the years, I've come to realise that I am not the smartest guy in the world and the opinion and collective knowlege of my peers will almost certainly be a much wiser decision than what I can come up with on my own.
Every suggestion will be appreciated. I thank all of the hardware sages in advance!
