Does the 3090 really need a backplate for cooling? I hope not (read it on some posts you dont necessary need a backplate on some gpu's) then it shouldnt be to much of an issue.
3090's have memory chips on the backside of the card unlike the 4090 and 3090 Ti. So yes, it does. 3090 is what brought about active backplates. On some cards these rear memory chips were hitting 100C or more.

Gosh after so much time spending on my rig back breaking work external rad my main rig put it all together. Leaktest with air pressure up to 0.5bar.....and yes a damn leak so...soap + distilled water and a Q-tip to find the culprit but none of my rotary fittings that i used was at fault here neither where the straight fittings maybe the QDC4's (2 pairs) nope,,,i seperated the external rad from my main rig STILL leaking so i knew its somewhere on my external rad either the rads or Dual d5 top + res and fittings NONE....

I couldnt put soapy water underneath the rad where the drain port is maybe that is the culprit i was hoping....nothing. Alright checking the port fittings and lo and behold one of the DAMN port fittings was not fully tightened on my AMS radiator. I even tried 2 Dr.drops but both of them showed the same result. Lesson = air pressure test is a god send if i used the regular method it would probably be a mess....On to the real leak test hopefully no more issues...

Update:

Everything works and temps are low. You MUST use the backplate there is no debating this ive included also in this thread EKWB fine responses (quick responding and helpful)

From stock cooler without case side panel i got 66c during F1 2022 at 4k
With side panel on it was cooking during F1 2022 = 84c !!

With the EKWB waterblock i get during F1 2022 = approx 37c - 42c a BIG difference!
RTX 4090 Idle = 21c - 23c

Water temp 21c - 23c according to AC Flow Next.

3Dmark Time Spy for RTX 4090 = 32c - 45c
1 hour Elden Ring gameplay RTX 4090 = approx 23c - 25c

All in all a drop of 44c im happy with the results.

Funny my RTX 4090 stays COOLER then my CPU i7-13700K both at idle and load.
