I was thinking of upgrading my computers motherboard,CPU and memory to the latest Intel has to offer.
How do the Intel boards rank in overclocking and performance compared to other brands in the Z790 market.
I could spend up to 1500.00 possibly a bit more for a descent MB,CPU and ddr5 memory.
Anyone have any ideas on what I can get for my price range.
I'll need a new water block also for my Swiftech H220 cooler for the Z790.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Hard to go past Asus ROG Z790 Apex Encore to be honest, especially if you want overclock your memory. Current Intel 14th gen CPU's dont really have much if anything in terms of core overclocking but memory overclocking has become a thing, especially if youre a gamer chasing more frames.

$1,500 is not enough for the best Intel has to offer right now. You'd have to settle for a weaker motherboard, which basically limits your memory performance down to ordinary levels.

Yeah... This generation is a bit rigid. You either go with the vast majority, or you go hardcore $$$. There isn't really anything in between.

There is a nice middle ground with an itx board if you can live with reduced connectivity.
That's what I do currently.

What’s up with this thread lol.

$1500 is more than enough. You don’t need an APEX running 8400 to stretch the legs of the platform. Most Z790 boards with 2x24 should be, in most cases, able to push 7200-7600 without too much issue.

Besides that, it’s $650 for an APEX Encore, and $550 for a 14900KF. If you’re paying $400 for a 2x24 kit these days, without having the intent of spending hours upon hours binning motherboards and CPUs for an IMC, you’re a sucker (or a psychopath like some of us here.. but we’re also suckers)

I also wouldn’t recommend an APEX to someone who hasn’t expressed interest in hardcore memory OC. There are levels to that rabbit hole. You can get plenty out of a Z790 4-DIMM.

OP is probably talking in CAD, since they are in Canada. So that would be more like $1,000 USD after taxes.

Either go 7800X3D or wait for Arrow Lake.

LGA 1700 is a dead-end platform and the current offerings have terrible power consumption (14900KS consuming almost 400W alone).

As an APEX Encore + 14900K + 48GB 7600MHz owner I would say skip this and either wait for Arrow Lake or get AM5 + 7800 X3D. This platform while nice its getting old now and will feel bad once its no longer supported in 6 months. At least with AM5 u can probably feel good about getting a nice MB that will last to Zen6.

I bet Arrow Lake will be a dud. 16th gen before new socket becomes viable, and 17th gen will be only a marginal improvement. They are going to focus on efficiency and processing won't increase more than 5%/gen. They will probably implement some tricks to raise fps, but we will look back fondly on LGA1700.

This only applies if you only use the system for gaming, for all other usage, the 14900K or 7950X are competitive, with the 14900K lacking AVX-512 and uneven IPC due to the E cores and the 7950X suffering intra core latency due to the dual CCX layout. Both have their ups and downs, but the 7950X is a new platform with a future upgrade path, 14900K is EoL making the 7950X a better choice if intending to keep the system for more than a few years.

Whats the difference between a Intel Z690 and a Z790 motherboard.
Is it just the memory....DDR5

The biggest advantage of a Z790 board will be enhanced memory capability. 4-DIMM Z690 boards were really bad and struggled to get above 6600+. The Z790 4-DIMM offerings made 7200-7400 “click and forget” with XMP, for the most part.

There are some other minor advantages, but the improved memory speeds is the main one. I would not buy a Z690 board at this point, regardless of price.

Well I'm a Asus guy.. If ya want 8000-8400 DDR5 then ya need a 2 dimm mb. Asus z790 Apex Encore..

If ya don't care and want a great mb.. then the Asus Z790 Dark Hero 4 dimm board. 4 dimm board wont give you a high mem overclock though.

14900k or maybe just a 14700k for gaming.. I won't say a 14900KS like I just bought for 200 more. Crazy to cool.

7200 ram I'd a safe bet for most setups.

Are you talking about the msi z790i edge? OR other board suggestions
Yes, I am! Currently running 8266c34 tight and almost got 8400c34 locked in for daily as well.
As I said, nice middle ground
