I would like to upgrade m 1080GTX to benefit from a 1440p 360hz monitor im going to buy

The Nvidia 1080 gtx specs page GeForce GTX 1080 | Specifications | GeForce
states

1080 GTX
  • 7680x4320@60Hz
  • DP 1.42, HDMI 2.0b, DL-DVI

Without changing the entire PC of course.

What are my current options - im very outdated in the PC hardware space right now.

CPU : 4770k overclocked
RAM : 32gb corsair

How much you want to spend? What games are you looking to run at 360hz?

with today's games, I wouldn't recommend anything lower than a 3080 / 3080 ti, especially for that high of a refresh rate.

I would also consider upgrading off of 4th gen, demanding that many fps is going to be hard too, I'd shoot for a bundle deal for a 13th gen or even a 12th gen.

High refresh depends on a strong cpu more than anything and your 4770k isn't going to cut it - depending on the games you play. I had a 4790k paired with 32gb of cl10 DDR3 2400mhz and a Radeon VII (which is faster than a GTX1080) but was bottlenecked in many games even at 4k.

I think something like a RX6700XT would be about as far as I'd bother with. You'll get a decent amount of vram and AMD gpu drivers have less cpu overhead so you will get more out of that 4770k than going with a Nvidia gpu (especially when it comes to 1% lows).

Upgrading from 4770k would ensure easily hitting those high fps. Whats your budget you could swing?
Correct me if im wrong - upgrading from 4770k 4th gen would require me to get an entire new motherboard, which would then likely need also new RAM, etc etc...
My 4770k Is overclocked to 5Ghz if my memories correct, Combined with a better GPU like listed above from SoloCamo or adolf512 - Why cant it handle 1080p @ 500hz for non-gaming purposes(technical drawings)

Taking on board all your comments, but I should of mentioned im not expecting 4k, only 1080p or 1440p - ideally at 500hz

also, not planning to play the latest games.
The lower you go in resolution means that the CPU will be the bottleneck even further. What older games are you playing? I can't hit anywhere near 500hz on plenty of them even with a 11900k which is considerably faster than your current 4770k.

Dont know what you mean technical drawings. What programs are those?

The video card is what makes it sing. I would recommend maxing out the CPU on what ever your board's specs will take and then find a 3080ti. Don't waste your money on a lesser card. You can always add RAM as you please. Also, consider a good 1440 monitor with at least a 240 refresh rate. None of this will break the bank and you can budget the build in easy steps.

@zzztopzzz I assumed the same, but many people are saying the 4770k @ 5hz wont cut the 240hz+ even at 1080p

He's already on the second best CPU for the board (4790k being better) and it's only a minor clock speed difference. 3080ti will be horribly bottlenecked for high refresh gaming and it turns out he's not even looking for gaming, just "technical drawings".

We can't help unless we know exactly what software you are using.

No idea what kind of gpu/cpu combo is needed to run programs like that.
CAD is more CPU intensive.

Wouldnt be anywhere near as intense as gaming... I just need to get 360hz / 500hz around 1080p / 1440p
My experience talking to CAD users is go for the highest res you can go for with decent latency (even 60hz is fine). That said, if you want 1440p 360hz just buy the monitor and see what you can achieve. For a program like that I don't see why a GTX1080 with display port 1.4 couldn't hold 360hz, even with your cpu at 1440p... even more so at 1080p.
