So I've been playing a lot of RDR2 lately with a ton of mods and having a blast, mostly.

However, I just started getting random crashes-to-desktop with no error message and when checking Event Viewer, I noticed that RDR2.exe is crashing with an 'ntdll.dll' error!

This is odd since the ntdll.dll file is associated with the OS and not any game in particular.

I ran SFC /SCANNOW and DISM commands to 'clean up' any potential corrupted OS files but no integrity violations were found.

I tried removing several of the recently added mods for RDR2 and I still get the error. I can replicate the error by going to the same location in the game - Mercer Station and riding north (away from it) - game freezes for about a second and then CTD.

When researching this error, I found a link that says this means it's a "heap corruption." huh? So it's related to memory/RAM somehow? Is this an issue with the mods in the game, or the game itself, or the actual OS?

No other game causes these issues so I'm pretty sure it's not my system/OS.

This is the error in Event Viewer:

Would really appreciate any help with this. My RDR2 if fine-tuned with a lot of mods and it plays (played) really well until yesterday when I started having this ntdll.dll error.

Thanks in advance.

What was the last mod you put ? This game is so unstable even without mods, i need to use 192khz sound quality instead of my 320khz to work properly, are you oc?

The last mod was the "Upscaled Items" mega-pack which has like 20GB of upscaled textures. I removed most of them and have about 7GB of upscaled textures.

That's strange because the game was mostly stable for me. I do get crashes on occasion but nothing like this error and not so frequently.

Here is my modlist as of now:

From my experience it's overclock issue, any oc can crash that game pretty easy.
No that can't be - I have 3 different rigs and this happens on ALL of them. They all have the same mods installed so it is 99% related to some mod incompatibility or some such thing. These are the types of errors that made me quit Skyrim back in the day. I used to play the hell out of that game for years with so many mods but the script mods on top of everything else caused so much bloat in the save files that corruption of those files was inevitable.

RDR2 is fun ONLY because of mods IMO (after the story is complete, the game is positively boring). RDO is absolute trash so I only play free roam with mods and it's amazingly fun but these random crashes without being able to properly diagnose & fix the issues are bogging the whole experience down. Sigh... the ntdll.dll and Unknown Error: FFFFF are basically indications that the game is borked.

Than thats the average rockstar experience..

So finally nailed down the issue - it was a script mod that was causing this error. I guess it was outdated and was throwing up errors and the game/system threw up its hands and errored out with "ntdll.dll" which is weird but once I got rid of the mod, the error hasn't occurred again (fingers crossed).

As someone said many years ago when Sykrim modding was all the rage: "script mods are of the devil."
