Hi Guys,
having an XFX Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB Speedster MERC 319 Black (RX-69XTACBD9).

Does anyone tried to change the thermal pads and repasted? Is there any benefit? Worth the trouble? Thinking about the Kritical Thermal Pads which are all over the place last few days :)

Was looking also for information's about what thermal pads are used there, mainly the thickness but was not able to find any information at all by googling.

Was asking the same question in the 6900 XT owners thread but got no answer ...

For any experience shared i would be grateful..

Thank you in advanced.

Not an owner of a 6900 XT Merc, but in general, there is marginal benefit to replacing the pads on most 6900 XTs, in of themselves. GDDR6 typically doesn't get anywhere near as hot as GDDR6X and the VRMs of most of these cards are no where near their limits, either in current or temp, especially at any settings you'd be cooling with the stock cooler.

GPU is a bit of another matter, a TIM replacement can help some cards a lot, but this can vary considerably from sample to sample. In general, if your peak load temp delta between GPU edge and hotspot is more than 20C, or either temp seems unusually high relative to others, a repaste may be a good idea. If you're replacing the GPU TIM, you may as well replace all the pads at the same time.

Looking at images of the card you have, there is a shared baseplate that makes contact with the GPU and memory, which is flush across the whole thing. My Power Color 6800 XT has the same sort of setup and the gap between the top of the GDDR6 and the plate when the GPU is making firm contact is almost exactly 1.5mm. If you have very stiff pads, 1.5mm will probably work, but soft 2mm pads is probably a better idea. I don't have any reliable info on the other pads.

Of course, you could just get some quality thermal putty and never have to worry about pads again.

Thank you for the reply. I already found out that the Merc Black is not that wide spread as other AIB cards and far more uncommon. The argumentation/explanation you made makes sense, which means that the information im looking for is "RARE" :)

Just wondering if the thermal putty would outperform the Kritical thermal pads with 20 mkW...

Even im knowing that the thermal at my card not a problem, im somehow obsessed with achieving the lowest temp with he actual cooling solution i can. That's the reason i was looking for the information as i would like to give it a shot... And i don't want to order all the spectrum of thickness of the pads as they are also not cheap lol..

have you tried contacting manufacturer? send email with card details and maybe they respond. i did this for may gaiward gtx 1070, and got exact specs for pads with heatsink sketch.

Hi there,

absolutly no clue which front needs which thickness as i was not replacing the thermal pads on my GPU....

Next the message i got form XFX is Copy -pasted so no additional information was shared from their side, but i specified my GPU in the email to them so the information applies for XFX Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB Speedster MERC 319 Black (RX-69XTACBD9) ... For other models i cant guarantee the validity.... Sorry.

Try to write them, if you get an answer please share ;) Thanks and GL...

Hi everyone! i just bought the same GPU ( MERC 319 SPEEDSTER RX 6900 XT) and i wish to know if anyone was changed the thermal pads, im not sure if the old owner of my GPU changed it and i dont trust in the current because my hotspot raises to 110° !!! anyone uses the thikness of memento mori says?

Front:
VRM 1.5mm , 2mm
VRAM 1mm

Back
VRM 1.5 mm
GPU, VRAM 3mm

The backplate of my GPU was all 3mm so i get mad haha

*Edit: I will no longer be cracking open a 6950XT, at least not for the forseeable future. I decided to return the card for refund and will instead be using my Strix 6800as an AMD test card.
I'll be cracking open an XFX 6950XT soon and can measure the pads when I do.

I'll be using the card to test out different Thermal Putties and pads, and sharing my results.
