You can get a 400GB P5801X for pretty cheap on Ebay or Ali Express, they are a very good option for an OS drive.
PCIe 4.0 and Optane's excellent RND 4K:

I currently have a 905P that works very well (bought on release).
I'm curious about the P5800X and P5801X, they seem slightly more powerful, and also need an adapter, right ?

The P5800X is almost impossible to find

PS: platform still in PCI-E 3, but I will switch to PCI-E 5 soon

The P5800X is the same U.2 as the 2.5 inch 905P, which needs an adapter to M.2.

The P5801X is E1.S, I could not find a direct conversation from E1.S to M.2, but a conversation from E1.S to U.2 and then from U.2 to M.2 worked. There are also adapter cards for E1.S to PCIe x4.

They are very expensive.

The 905P is PCI-E, no adapter ;)
E1.S to PCI-E card would be great

Yeah too, the best is P5801X I guess

And on all the P5801Xs I've found (ebay, Ali Express), the SSD says ES (Engineering Sample)
Aren't there any "normal" ones (authorized for sale) ?

Or just the photo isn't good and as long as it's a "SSDPFR1Q400GBF1" it's good ?

The 2.5" 905Ps need an adapter. ;)

I have three 2.5" 905p drives and they all use U.2 to M.2 or PCIe adapters. I also have a 900p PCIe card and a 905p M.2 drive, which do not need adapters.

E1.S to PCI-E card would be great
ADT-Link R27C, make sure to get the C version because they also have A and B versions that are U.2 and U.3 respectivly.

GBF1's are not engineering samples, but be careful of GBEF drives. I would not trust the photos. I purchased from the listing I linked and the photo says SSDPFR1Q400GBEF but the description says SSDPFR1Q400GBF1 and that is what I recieved. They are OEM drives, Intel's Memory and Storage Tool calls it a P5800X and will not flash it, while Intel support says it is an OEM drive and the firmware is probably already the newest available (L031FP01).

Ok, I have 905P PCIe, no need adapter

Ok, I found an adapter that seems to work well, several have tested it (and sold it with the 5801X)

On your photo it says GBF1 and in the title of the ad too, did you receive GBF1 or GBEF ?

How do I know if the one is selling is a non-ES ?
even if GBF1 is indicated on one image but ES on another 'on the site
Just take the seller's word for it

Otherwise, this photo appears to be the actual product being sold
Same as yours (ebay link)

Thanks

Are you sure you are looking at the same listing I linked? In my listing the photo is of a GBEF drive, but the title says GBF1.

I did recieve a GBF1 drive.

ES are rare, OEM drives are a lot more common. I would not worry too much about getting an engineering sample. If they call it a GBF1 in the listing then all we can do is trust them. Mine worked out.

Ah yes, it's matt's link, the GBF1 ;)

Ok thanks, The one sold has firmware L031FP01 (a person who bought it posted a photo in the comments).

I had just seen on the Intel forum that with OEMs, you have to go through the seller for warranty, etc.

I assume no warranty for these. They are very robust drives, but we are very unlikey to get any support from our friends in Hong Kong. :(

I just noticed that I was still using the Intel NVMe driver! The Standard NVMe driver is known to perform better for RND4K, and for me it does:

Very good performance with Intel drivers already

Is it a good idea to order from Ali Express (I guess it's the same as Ebay with some sellers) given all the delivery problems, counterfeiting (in this case, little risk) etc... ?
Never bought for this amount on AE

I would risk it, I think I found the same drive from the same seller on Ali Express for a little less. That said, I know how Ebay's buyer's protections work and I am less sure how reliable they are on Ali Express. Neither are perfect.

Ok thanks

You have the link for Ali Express, see if it's the same that I found

EDIT : The one in your link (Ebay) is even cheaper than the one I found on AE, and the delivery is faster.
But it doesn't come with an adapter. I messaged the seller to see if one was available.

And strangely, with the same seller, it's cheaper on Ebay.com (in euros) than on Ebay.fr (my country), still including taxes

Ok thanks, I'm looking for the adapter I would like

Found this one for almost the same price on ebay than that of your link, with the adapter I want, but longer delivery

Surely take the one from AE

Right, Window's built in drivers are better than anything else available.

That 17.11.3.1010 was Intel's old NVMe driver, with worse performance than the Windows default driver. Don't install it!

Ok, I use 5.3.0.1010 version (Intel) with 905P a little better than MS
