Hey all i just got my new pc and am confused as to why only 4GB of ram is showing up in the bios and windows. I have installed (2X3)6GB Gskill 1333 and am running Vista 64. used an app in windows to check how much ram was present it said 6GB but bios and windows are being a *****...
Is there anything im missing a certain option in the bios?
Thankz

i7 - 920
Gigabyte GA-EX58-DS
Asus HD4870 1GB
6GB Gskill 1333

Are you using 8PIN ATX 12V power plug?

If so, you may want to remove your CPU and check to be sure there are NO pins bent under the CPU, as this has been known to cause this issue

Ok so i checked no pins issue
Things get wierd now
i updated the bios to the F5 version
and im getting 6GB showing up in windows and CPUz
but the bios still only says 4 this is messing with my mind
could one of the slots on the mobo be busted?

Hello,

I have the exact same problem as Koblinz.
- Core i7 920 on GA-EX58-DS4
- DDR3 G.Skill Extreme Series NQ 6Go ( 3*2 ) PC12800 Tri Channel F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ
It worked for a couple of days and all of a sudden only 4Gb were seen in the BIOS.
Tested all 3 memory modules one by one with memtest and all were OK.
Updated BIOS from F3 to F4 and cleared CMOS but no change.
Updated BIOS from F4 to F5 and cleared CMOS but still no change.
The next morning the PC boots up and POST shows 6Gb of RAM!!!!
I then run 3dmark 06 for the day and it runs fine. At the end of the day when closing 3Dmark down I notice it shows only 4Gb although there were 6Gb seen when I started the computer.
Vista 64 then shows 4Gb too and so does the BIOS after a restart.

I am sending the mobo + CPU + memory back for testing and hopefully replacement.

I assumed this was a mobo issue but I am not that sure considering that the memory contoller is in the CPU.

How did you solve your problem Koblinz????

Best regards

Hey Tranksen
i still have the issue where i am seeing 6GB of ram in windows and CPUZ but the bios is still only showing up with 4GB i have asked around and keep getting the same answer to wait for another bios update as the motherboard cant be busted because 6GB is actually showing up on windows so il wait till the newer bios comes out and see what happens or i might end up taking it back let me know how you go with a replacment if it fixes then i may do the same.
Cheers transken

Hello everyone,

Last night I have disassembled my computer in order to ship the motherboard back to my supplier to have it tested but as I removed the CPU I understood what was wrong.

The pin issue lsdmeasap pointed out earlier in this thread is the problem I am having. It could not understand it as I read this advice as there are no pins on these CPUs.
The faulty pins are on the motherboard. There are 3 damaged pins on the socket. They are located beneath the middle square.

I need to get a magnifier and see if these can be rearranged but I am not very optimistic.

This is not the 1st rig I have assembled and what I did wrong to end up with this mess is beyond my understanding.
I just laid the CPU and there is only one direction it fits in.
It could have happened while I mounted the cooler but then why only 3 pins would be damaged and why these ones and not some on the edges?

How strong is supposed to be the resistance when putting the lever back down?

Any advice would be most welcome.

Best regards
Tranksen

Yes, sorry to not have better described what I meant. I did mean in the CPU Socket check for bent pins.

It is pretty hard to engange the lever to install the CPU, so that is normal and I do not think the pins bent from that as the CPU is flat on the bottom. It had to have happened before you installed the CPU or before you even got the board

hello again everyone,

I am so gutted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have replaced my GA-EX58-DS4 over the weekend by an Asus p6T Deluxe V2.
There were some bent pins on the Giga-Byte mobo and it was very unlikely that the company I got it from would replace it. I then decided to buy another motherboard. I got all the parts put together by the techies in the store I bought this new motherboard. I had all 6 Gb of RAM detected and everything work fine for the day but tonight ... IT JUST HAPPENED AGAIN ... I got a crash in Windows Vista 64 and when rebooting there were just 4Gb detected in the BIOS.
I am so frightened with what i'll see when I remove the CPU again. Will I get some bent pins again? How on earth is this possible??? This has to be a CPU but will Intel trust my words?
I am so disappointed and sad.

I have no clue what to do next.

Can anyone offer any clues? I am not sure if I can get in direct touch with Intel.

Thank you very much

Cheers
tranksen

If you have bent pins again it is not the CPU, so no need to contact Intel

Do you have your ram voltage set, if not that may cause issues with detecting the amount, but not likely.

Again, check for bent pins sadly
