I just installed Quake 3 for old time sake, and I remember back in the day when I played, everybody would uncap the FPS from 91 (or raise the cap), because it would allow you to jump up to a spot in one of the maps that you otherwise couldn't. It's not a cheat, all the pro players did it and it was (and probably still is) well known.

Anybody remember how to do it?

EDIT:
Oh, and it is not v-sync. I always have v-sync disabled.

It's a "bug" in the Q3 engine which allows for higher jumps. Another bug is 71FPS = less recoil in W:ET, which is particularly helpful with sniper rifle and pistols, not sure if it works for other Q3/modified Q3 games though.

I don't know how to tell how old this thread is so I'll just "stick a foot in the water".

I am very interested in discussing Q3 tweakage since I recently began playing it again, especially on Linux (I have always been addicted to the CTF Space maps but been jonesing a long time) Many of the still existing tweak guides haven't been updated since 2000-2001

Anyone still sub'd to this thread and still interested in sharing tweak knowledge?

To know how old any given thread or post is, just look on the top-left corner of the post in question.

Check that out if you'd like to pick up Q3 again.
I have already picked it up again and am falling in love all over again. The tricks possible with modern hardware and long developed skilz is just amazing. I can;t get enough of old skool CTF Space maps byt there are also really great new maps. I just want to update tweaks a little,

PS Thanks to TwoCables as well for the heads up. Guess I've stared at too many posts and looked right through it heh

I was trying to get back into 1vs1 but the duel scene in quake live is brutal. Some of the best players in the world troll the duel servers and I just don't have the time/dedication/skill to be competitive. But if someone wants to play I'd be all for it, my qL name is dactyl. Add meh!

I also used to trick and still have TONS of old saved maps. In fact if someone wants a ****ton of q3 maps, get me access to space to upload and I'll share.

I recently was invited into an amazing Q3 Arena map on the GIN server that is all advanced skilz tests like

Plasma Wall Climbing
Rocket Climbing
Strafe Jumping
Advanced Rocket Jumping

and much much more

You got this map?

There are lots of trick maps with practice areas like these. cosbeta17b, tr1ckhouse3, blissbeta, csu1a, are just a few I can name. I can visualize lots more but don't know the names (I haven't messed with that stuff in years). Back when Defrag was popular (like 2001-2004ish) there was a whole community of mappers doing trick maps.

I found the map of which I was speaking. It's called Ultimate2 and for some reason it shows up under "Team Deathmatch". I hadn't known where to look. Have you ever played this map? OMG it is hard Some of the rooms I can only get part way through. Not only is it a great challenge and learning tool but it is an eye opener as to what is even possible. Whew!

Got any like that?

I found map downloads for the server you were on, and ultimate 2 is listed

No i don't remember it from the small pic thats included on the site. Q3 had thousands of user made maps floating around out there. Lots of them are just borrowed concepts from earlier ones.

on their list, heres the ones I used to play a lot

cos1_beta7b

jjm2
csu1_a

They have a few defrag time run maps in there also. Vid of probably the best strafejumper in the world in case you don't know what I'm talking about. Fast forward that video to 12:45 if you want to see whats probably the most incredible display of skill ever in a video game lol Even for non-quake fans, I s1ht you not, the run at 12:45 will blow your mind.

Lots of people do play, I wouldn't call it a small community. But I'm sure plenty of people get scared off. I only play duels which is extremely newbie-unfriendly (I get massacred 90% of the time) so I'm a bad judge of what the newbies are doing. People probably start on FFA or clan arena servers.

It is intimidating for a new player to start, all this stuff is moving so fast and you just got killed eleven times in the last 10 seconds and your not even sure by what. You have to leave your ego at the door and accept beatings. But the cool thing is that after practice you'll really see yourself getting better, you'll feel it the same way you get better at hitting a baseball or throwing a football. And like those sports there is really no limit to how good you can get.

Geeez I spend way too much time playing and then way too much time watching. I'm a sick man lolz. Then I see this! This guy(s) must never sleep except to dream up moves and relive maps. I didn't skip ahead because it was pretty mind blowing right from the start.

That video is one awesome convergence of science, art, sports, and synapses. Wow! and yes...the freakin castle run is too sick for words. I kept flashing back to really old games, even Mario jump puzzle maps, and laughing at ever thinking those were difficult or intimidating and they were 2D!!!!.

One thing I'd like to know more about is how he gets so much side-to-side airtime travel allowing him to recover from drifting outside the walls so much? It can't be just mouse sensitivity because it seems that coarse of a n effect would ruin finer accuracy.... or so it seems. This is the kind of tweaks I want to know about. I fully realize that human skilz are a large part of the equation, but let's face it even Lance Armstrong isn't winning the Tour de France on a tricycle. Finely tuned hardware matters.

Do you know about how to learn such tweaks?

Thanks again Dactyl

No tricks, just cpm physics.

cpm came at the end of q3...it's never really been terribly impressed by what people can pull off for trick jumps in cpm...having the ability to jump while in air already was never the intention of the devs - just a community mod.
