Yes there is, but it depends on the PSP your friend got.
Psp-1000 (Fat)
Psp-2000 (Slim&Lite)
Psp-3000 (Slim&Brite)
At the bottom of the case there is a sticker, where you can see which of the three above it is.

If you want to play backups you made of your own games, you'll have to flash custom firmware to the PSP. Otherwise, you'll have to buy the games from PSN.

Check on google, so much stuff you can do if you have custom firmware. If you have updated in the last year or so it's a PITA. But you have to buy/make what's called a pandora battery. You can find one for like $10 USD on ebay. Good luck, you can play all gameboy games, and i've heard some n64 games. It's crazy what you can do. There are full guides if you look up... {Psp Custom Firmware Tutorial}

Actually, if you've got a compatible motherboard in your PSP (which you'd need even if you had a Pandora battery), you can flash CFW without a Pandora. Pretty cool

Hes got the PSP-1000

So, its already been modded so it can play games off of the memory stick, so find the games, and its as simple as loadiing them on to the stick?

Anyone know a good program for converting PSX ISO's to PSP playable *.BPB files? I've tried a couple and they seem to just create unworkable files that crash after the PSX logo...

Ok, figured it out - hooray for popsloader.

The little analogue nub on the PSP functions as L2 and R2 on psx games

If your running custom firmware and own the PS1 game, you can just rip the PS1 disc, turn it into an eboot, and throw it on your psp's memory stick. The psp's built in PS1 emulator will do the rest.
