First of all, this might sound like a odd mod, but I think it might work.

OK, lately I've been leaving my computer on all night for folding but I find my room gets way to hot. It's kinda hard to sleep. (Leaving the door open is not a option.)

So, I was wondering, would installing two 250mm fans (one at the top and one at the bottom) help with keeping temps normal? Or should I go for four 120mm or something else?

The door is thin wood and it around 3cm thick.

Thanks.

Sounds like a very odd idea to me.

Anything's possible, but I really wouldn't expect two wimpy little fans like that to help much if at all; let alone all the work that would have to be done in getting everything set up.

If you have a window, your best bet would be to use one of those dual-fan inserts as an exchange (one set to exhaust and one set to intake). I'm not recommending this particular model, but something similar or like this:

Why not go all out and just put a hinge on a cutout whole on the door, then slap a box fan in there while you're sleeping? Kind of like a doggy door for your fan. That way, when you're not using the fan, you can still keep your privacy by closing/locking the hinge.

Using the window won't work, in the summer I'd be wasting AC and in the winter I'd be wasting heat that the house could use.

The fan needs to be on all the time.

With the limitations of a) not using the window and b) the door having to remain closed, you're not going to have a lot of options.

The last thing I can think of is making a ducting system from your computer's exhaust directly to and through your door. This way it's fanless, it still keeps all of the usable heat within your home (while still removing it from your room), and you've only got to cut one hole in your door.

Picture a setup similar to what your washer/dryer likely uses:

That would cause issues with open and closing the door though...

Does anyone think six 120mm fan's putting out 65 CFM each would work well? Wouldn't I need around 72 volts?

Just buy a box fan, cutout a hole for it in your door and make it permanent if the fan is going to be on ALL of the time. Putting some 120mm PC fans isn't going to cool a bedroom, unless for some reason the rest of your house is about 8c cooler than your room.

Even then, installing a fan in your door isn't the most logical thing to do. Have you thought of putting up a vent above your door? The space between the door frame and the ceiling? I've had that in a house before. You still get your privacy with the benefit of the air from the rest of the house. Keeping noise isolated to one room is going to be a problem no matter what you do, though.

May I ask, why is your room so much hotter than the rest of the house? Seems to me like you should be calling an AC tech and not looking for places to stick fans

Actually I think the difference is around 5-10°.

The vent is a good idea, I might put all six fans in the bottom and just do a vent on top.

My computer already makes a ton of noise already, so that isn't a issue. I guess the issue is a few things: room is small (maybe around 15x15 feet), it's facing south and my computer does put a lot of heat out. I've already turned off the heat to my room but it's not enough.

I'm planning on putting the fan's IN the door (it's hollow and thin). Mounting is going to be a pain...

Oh... I guess the easiest to power it would be getting a cheap old 100W PSU.

I really don't think pc fans will do that much, unless the computer is right next to the door. Honestly, I mounted an AC blower (crazy CFM) on my window exhausting and I couldn't even feel it pulling air through the room. Keep in mind this blower had dual ~120mm (fans?). When I turned it on I could feel very strong airflow from at least 6' away if not more.

I'd go with the box fan idea if you really don't want to use the window. TBH I don't think its worth messing up your door, but that is your decision. (I didn't mean for that last sentence to sound as rude as it did).

Computer is around 4 feet away.

The idea isn't to cool down the computer, it's to level out the temperature in my room.

No, no, I'm fine with rude, I wanna know what people think.

I'll be "messing up" the door no matter what anyway. Plus the door isn't looking so great already.

rofl when i posted the first time, i thought you ment the door on your pc.. not the door to the room. no way in is 2 250mm computer fan going to cool a whole room noticibly.

and its going to look pretty gheto once you get this all done. i don't see how your pc can heat up the room that much, nothing in it makes that much heat. try better pc cooling rather then room cooling?

My point with the computer being next to the fans was that you'd want the hot air to be exhausted straight out the door, instead of heating up the room. Fans that small won't be able to exhaust enough to cool off the whole room, but if the hot exhaust went straight out the door then you wouldn't have to worry about that.

Maybe find some flexible ducts (the plastic kind that bend easier, so you can open the door) and run them straight to the door from your exhaust fan. You could even stick a fan in the door too to help draw the air out of the duct.

Vent in the roof won't work, as it's even warmer up there!

If I leave the door open the room gets enough air. I'm thinking maybe even a vent by itself would work.

I'm also thinking of doing a number display on the door, showing my folding points. Sure, no point but freaking cool! So the power would already be there.

Thanks guys for all the help!

duct booster...

have one of these inline with my equipment rooms AC vent wired to a relay so when the AC isn't running, it is, so the booster circulates the air dumping the heat out of the room instead of my equipment room swinging 10-20 degrees, dead silent too as it's in the attic.

if you don't have returns in your rooms you should install vents in your doors, walls, or trim your doors so they have a gap at the bottom...
