It used to be that Firefox, Opera and others were the "alternative" Web browsers, but in an age of forced ballot screens that's not entirely accurate. In fact, one could say that the more experienced a user is the further and faster they run from Internet Explorer.

Excluding the "big five" you're undoubtedly familiar with (IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and Safari), there are many little-known browsers that are potentially even more suitable for your needs, no matter how basic or advanced.

This week we are taking a look at six truly alternative browsers and what separates them from the rest of the pack. This is far from an all-inclusive list, and we'd love to hear if you happen to be using any of these yourself or perhaps there's yet another unheard of browser that we missed. In alphabetical order, the browsers:

some of these look pretty cool, especially with the growing popularity of tablet, netbook, and slate computing with lesser specs, less demanding browsers and browsers where you can switch up the way it decodes pages and whatnot, looks pretty cool

The Pale Moon project is the one that got my attention

Knew about the others already except Maxthon and K-Meleon

i didnt, i know of alot more obscure browsers than the ones listed there, but they are mostly very rough, i use one called qtweb at work when im forced to use the p3/256mb ram/xp pro sp3 computer there caause its super light lol

if that one really works as well as it says with FF add-ons i might use it, because i use like a dozen add-ons for various style and functionality traits

I've used SRWare Iron for a while now, though admittedly it is little more than a rebuild of Chrome without some of the Google-fu. Always interesting to see what some of the newer ideas and implementations of something as simple as web browsers are.

WOW. Pale moon is awesome, I basically installed it and once it opened, I thought..... ok.. Why did it just open firefox? It's the EXACT same minus the mem usage. Worthy switch.

I've actually heard of + used three of these before.

In past experience, More memory a browser uses, the more sluggish it becomes when it comes to rendering.

Heh, when I installed Pale Moon, I checked the "Open Pale Moon when installation is finished" or something like that. It would tell me that Pale Moon was already running and that I would need to close it before starting it... I Was like ***? But Firefox was running, so I said oh.

It feels snappier loading webpages, and granted I dont have a lot of plug-ins they all seems to work, including the custom Persona I have.

Ive seen a rendering issue on a forum I visit, but that's about it so far. Gmail loads about twice faster and the same goes for Facebook. Another forum I go loads a bit faster.

Firefox has a memory leak problem where it just continues to use more and more and more and more memory while it's open. It's like water leaking into a bucket: it just continues to fill up.

So, this is one reason why a big deal is made about using less memory than the official Firefox. But not just that, even for users who aren't experiencing a memory leak in Firefox, using less memory helps make the browser snappier.

Besides, when a programs uses less memory, it's always a good thing.
