EDIT: GF just called so I took the opertunity to have a quick chat on the topic of which game - she agrees that based on what i've discovered and what you've all shown me that Burnout is the best choice.

Decisions made, Thanks everyone. you were great!

Okay, so I dont own any consoles but I love gaming on my PC and my GF has started taking a liking to PC gaming as well. I recently picked up a pair of 360 controllers (well technically one is a ps3 controller because I hate the 360 layout but I use the motioninjoy drivers to emulate the 360 controller with it)for the pc since she is more comfortable using a 360 controller than a keyboard and mouse (she used to play on consoles occasionaly).

Anyway, one of the games we play is Trackmania and while she enjoys the track making aspects and the over-the-top tracks, those same aspects fusterate her when she finds herself crashing more often than driving. There have many times where she has said that she would prefer a "Crashing game to a driving game".

Well... this got me thinking... I've heard of Flatout and Burnout although I've never played either. They both seem to be right up her alley (and I've personally always thought they looked fun but never actually got around to playing either).

Which game is better? Does either one work well with a 360 controller? Does one of them run poorly because of it's console origins? While I personally wouldnt mind a racing aspect, I believe my GF would most enjoy the crashing aspect - which has the better/more spectacular/more fun crashes? Which one implements crashing into the game modes better?

A really nice feature would be if I only had to buy one copy of the game and could play with her but on only one pc. Does either support split-screen on PC or "pass the controller/turn taking" multiplayer on the same computer?

lastly, if I were to buy one I'd likely do so through steam, just for the convienience of it but if someone knows of a much better deal let me know.

Thanks

Burnout Paradise on PS3/X360 doesn't support split screen but it does have the pass the controller style multiplayer which is quite fun. I reckon it would be the same deal on PC. Definitely a game worth looking into as the Ultimate Box is rather cheap on PC from memory and the game is fun as hell.

So... heres the biggest question: is the crashing well implemented into the game types/is there a game type strictly focused on crashing? and are the crashes spectacular?

Game looks great to me from screens but I can only tell too much and I cant really tell how the crashing is... I don't want the GF to be dissapointed by a "racing game with crashes" when what she really wants is a "crashing game" if you know what I mean.

Thanks

EDIT: from what i can see from screens, Flatout looks like its more crash oriented where Burnout is more race oriented.... but then I really cant seem to find out anything much on either. Burnout looks like a "better" game overall though.... im most confused.

Thanks.

Any votes for Flatout? It'll be a day or two before I make my decision so I have some time.

Burnout is all about crashing for points while racing. Flatout is a rally racing game thats more realistic. They are both great games and I honestly cant tell you which is all around better. If it came down to graphics I would say Burnout Paradise. Oh, and flatout 2 is a joke.

I tried the FlatOut Ultimate Carnage demo on the PC and found it more difficult than the average racing game, so that may be a factor.

Burnout has a game mode where the goal is to create the largest pileup possible given the current situation. Flatout has games where you crash your car into a wall and your ragdoll flies out of the windshield, performing long/high jumps, bowling, darts, etc.

I vote for Burnout x1000

It's broken up into a three different kinds of cars:

1. Speed
2. Stunt
3. Aggression

There are several types of events:

1. Point to point race
2. Takedown (crash as many opponents as possible)
3. Marked man (survive and race to end point)
4. Stunt (get as many stunt points in a given amount of time)

In the PC version there are 75 cars but that's a little misleading since each car has a tweaked version you can nab; which the game counts as a separate car. You can also buy 4 Legendary cars (spoofs of famous movie cars), 2 Boost Specials (one insane speed demon and another that allows you to change boost type on the fly), and a handful of toy cars (cartoonish parodies of other in-game cars).

She definaitly doesnt want something too difficult! and shes more into crashing than racing. When she wants to actually race we can always load up trackmania (or midnight club 2 if she ever feels comfortable with it). The ragdoll thing seems nice but I could imagine it becoming fusterating more than fun after a while... definaitly looking like Burnout is the winner here..

Toss realism out the window, we want over the top crashes!

. I'm looking at the latest versions of both games (burnout paradise: the ultimate box, and Flatout Ultimate Carnage) so flatout 2 isnt really in the question (unless it was better, but apparently it is not

).

Crashing for points sounds like just her thing.

Thanks both of you, and everyone else. Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box looks to be the winner. I'll likely pick tomarrow afternoon (after class when my GF is here). You were all a huge help! (I was actually thinking that flatout looked like more of a "crashing" game than burnout till I got all your input!

Well... I just had Burnout voted for by a guy in a megaman helmet... I cant argue with that under the role of my current avatar!
