I recall years ago there being none sound blaster branded card that used sound blaster chip sets. These were high end audiophile grade cards using if I recall X-fi chips ???
Does anyone recall these ? And if so who made them?

Thanks.

As the list reflects, the latest were integrated on Gigabyte motherboards, like 12 years ago.
In 2023, nobody cares about sounds cards anymore, sadly. External DAC/Amps are all the rage now, in the high end, or simply USB headphones with 2 cent DACs.

egh, DACs suck, USB can only do so much too. I get the idea and they do have lot to offer, but they are not for me as most are supper cheap but with a high end price tag.
It is worth noting this is for a XP retro gaming PC so EAX is needed, no dac can do EAX, and yes I know about emulators but they are garbage.

I get you, but ... it is what it is. Since MS killed DirectSound3D and all of the audio goodies, everything went downhill for audio in games.
Even the new Creative chips are not that great, I mean, some cards do sound awesome, in my opinion, like the AE-7, but the 3D effects are cheap sounding.
I hear good things about Super X-Fi, but the only external DAC from Creative I would consider buying, the SB X5, does NOT have that, despite the DSP chip being the actuall SXFI chip, lol.

Your best bet would be getting an actual Creative sound card, like the X-Fi Fatality, on PCIe.

Have you ever used a older SB? most all of them sound like crap. hissing, buzzing, bad treble/bass mix. like no bass at all and what bad you get is distorted. so everything sounds like it's being filtered through a tin can.
I'm using Sextett's BTW.

I have used SB as the only sound card in my PCs sincer ... the 486 era.
But to be honest, up until like 8 years ago, I was using crap gaming headphones, so could not tell which is good or which is bad, lol.

Ha, I started with the AKG K240, but moved to the AKG K702, K612, K712, K7XX. Cannot tell about the K240, they sounded super nice but I did not like the comfort. The others I mentioned sound also super nice, to me at least, have more comfort, so so, but they are so silly designed and built....damn.

Anyway, no EAX, but I find my AE-7 to sound quite clear and nice otherwise.

Creative really screwed over certain sound blaster card owners in the event that they released a GARBAGE sound driver designed to annoy you into buying one of their newer “premium” cards by limiting the accessibility and power of said cards such as the EMU10k and others. Meaning the cards underperform and I can honestly say that without the drivers you’ll not get better than onboard sound even though the official drivers will install and give you sound. Tested and proven with my sound blaster audigy 2. Old x-fi cards were good too but ruined by their drivers, But again the drivers….

if by any chance you want to try real drivers, see if your card is in this support package, works with windows 11 as well and for all you vintage sound card owners… don’t throw out your cards till you try. “What U Hear” works perfectly now and no more micro stuttering in the sound when using SLI ( a chronic problem for sli users). Not to mention that audigy cards are sooo cheap on eBay, could get a 200$ sound card for 5-10bucks and you’ll know it will work on the glossy new os windows 11, all my computer builds will sport creative cards (even though I’m mad at creative).ASIO, eax,direct3d sound, all working very well! But i am not sure how much sound has changed and evolved to create a need for the newer sound cards with 384 khz and 32bit sound but if you have an old one and want it to work, then I hope this link serves you well.

I personally have noticed that the bass doesn’t roll off anymore and choke the rest of the sound, songs stay flat and volumized. I haven’t tested it on recordings so I cannot say if it’s better than a production level m.audio card but it’s OK in my book
