That was second step. but thanks anyway I got figured out change in bios setting to select M.2 mode then using ghost image to clone the old ssd drive to the new m.2 ssd drive. Everything work as it should but only one problem the speed read/write is not close to the M.2 spec said at all.
On specs, the samsung 950Pro is 2500 read and 1500 write. I did 3 different ssd bechmark test and all I got similar to 750read and 745write. What do I missing here? maybe the MaximusVII hero mobo is can only support the M.2 slot up to 750mb speed?
can anyone point out what is bottle neck on my system?

i7 4790K + Corsair H100i cooling
Asus Maximus VII hero z97
Samsung M.2 950 Pro
Seagate 2T 7200RPM as torage
Corsair DRR3 dominator PC2400 8 x2
Radeon R9 390 VGA

Did you install the NVME drivers? I get the rated specifications when benchmarking.

 

I got all drivers updated and ran test again but still show at 766 for read and 745 for write. This telling me something bottle neck the speed maybe the Z97 chip set is not support higher speed.

 

In the ASUS Z97 motherboard gen, only the Impact VII fully supports PCIe 3.0 4X speed SSD's. The Gene and Hero m.2 slots supports 2X speeds and are limited to PCIe 2.0 bandwidth. In essense, you have half the bandwidth and half the speed of what's possible on the Impact VII, that's why you're seeing around only 750MB/s or 1/4 (1/2* 1/2) the total possible theoretical speed of ~3000MB/s.

I'm getting a used Gene board soon, and 750MB/s isn't going to bother me that much since I will care more about avg random read/write versus sequential. If the full speed is needed, getting an adapter is an option since I don't plan to SLI again anytime soon. In the future, when you upgrade to a capable motherboard, you will realize the full potential of your SSD too.

Can you answer a question for me -- by using the m.2 slot, does your GPU operate at 8X or is it still at full 16X?
