I asked in the Crosshair X870E Hero thread and did not receive any responses so I am posting in this thread to see if I can get some responses. No response could just mean no one knows or has an opinion so I will see what happens with this thread.

I want to use two of the Samsung 990 Pro M.2 2280's. You can buy these with a heatsink and without. Having the heatsink seems like a good idea, but I am wondering about the extra height the heatsink will add. Is there anyway to tell if there will be a clearance issue on this motherboard?

with heatsink
SAMSUNG 990 PRO M.2 2280 4TB PCI-Express Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 V7 V-NAND 3bit MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V9P4T0CW. W/Heatsink - Newegg.com

and without heatsink
SAMSUNG 990 PRO SSD 4TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 Internal Solid State Hard Drive, Seq. Read Speeds Up to 7,450 MB/s for High End Computing, Gaming, and Heavy Duty Workstations, MZ-V9P4T0B/AM - Newegg.com

This MB has five M2 ports. You can use 1, 4 and 5 without affecting the GPU. In the manual MB layout drawing, ports 4 and 5 do not look the same as 1, 2 and 3.

Is there any drawback to using port 4 or 5? I only need two of the M2 ports.

Buy without heatsink, the motherboard has it’s own. The bottom slots just on the upper side has heatsink, but enough. The upper and medium slots offer heatsinks both side. Interesting the ones which are limiting the GPU’s bandwidth, has the more serious heatsinks. Asus didn’t think this through well. Anyway, I am also using it with 3nvme ssd in the mentioned slots. To the down two slots i did put slower nvme SSDs, in case if there the speed would be limited.

Thanks for confirming both questions!

Just to add to what Alexshunter said, slots m2, 4 and m2,5 are gen4 only. Slots m2, 1 through 3 are gen 5 but as has already been said using 2/3 kill the bandwidth on the GPU.

my configuration is m.2, 1 - gen 5 SSD
M.2, 4/5 - gen 4 ssd.

my understanding is that if you want a better PCIe lane layout you need to look at the ASRock Taichi or for the max: the MSI X870E Godlike.
