I currently have Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes PRO. I would like to find out If I should stick with them or switch to something better. For those of you who have used one or both, how do you like it? Did you stay with them or did you switch to another vendor? I'm currently hearing conflicting reviews about them. Some say they are good, some say they are weak and so on,

Thanks!

I would keep MBAM Pro and lose MSE, replacing it with something like Avast free. No...wait...that's exactly what I did. MSE consistently ranks near or at the bottom of most professional OS testers. I had problems with MSE the few months I used it. MBAM Pro, on the other had, is an excellent program. Many people complain about Avast having too many popups but one can set it to minimize or eliminate the popups.

I always hear good things about MBAM. I got the PRO version which is good for life. MSE on the other hand gets mixed reviews so I'm not sure what to go for. I don't mind paying for an antivirus as long as I'm well protected,

The biggest hit against MSE isnt that its bad, its that its not anti-virus, its anti-spyware that was poorly marketed so people think its anti-virus.

Pairing it with MBAM Pro isnt a bad Idea at all as MBAM is very, VERY good and MSE IS fairly good at what its designed to do.

Personally, ive been using Webroot Secure Anywhere.
But my normal recommendation for people is MBAM Pro + MSE, ESET Antivirus, or Webroot.

Personally I recommend Kaspersky Anti-Virus as a paid solution and Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition as a free solution. Avira also has good detection rates these days but I've never liked it. Avast isn't as good as solutions like Kaspersky, Bitdefender or Avira, but it is better than the likes of AVG and MSE.

It varies greatly depending where you look, they're pretty much equal. The only thing I dislike about Bitdefender is that (at least in the free version) you cannot opt out of the service that submits data and file samples etc to them and it also tends to crash a lot due to simple things like a change in screen resolution when starting a game. At the end of the day, even the best anti-virus solution offers very minimal protection in the fact that they only detect known malware samples which themselves are very easily disguised to avoid detection.

Kaspersky, Bitdefender, and ESET all have excellent reputations and are better than any freebie as long as you don't mind paying for yearly licenses. Even Norton isn't the horribly boated monster it used to be (although I will never use any Symantec product again).

How are the following?:

ESET
F-Secure
Panda
Trend Micro
Webroot
Vipre

I don't plan to go back to Avast, AVG or Norton. Avast and AVG were just hard for me to navigate through. Too many menus I couldn't understand.

They all have their pros and cons and detections varies across the board depending on the type of malware. It is really a numbers game. Any of them should work fine because the ultimate big factor is whether or not you browse weird porn sites, execute random binaries that you download, and/or leave your system unpatched.

There are a lot of things you can do to prevent malware. Simply browsing in a virtual linux environment will protect you from 99% of the crap you can get on your system. The other 1% is just not being stupid about your computer practices. Viruses are overrated. And the ones that exploit your system via 0-day exploits is tricky because there is almost nothing you can do against those save from having a very detailed firewall rule/exception list.

Anyone have some reviews of the following?:

F-Secure
Panda
Trend Micro
Webroot
Vipre

I would say Panda then. But if you find AVG or Avast hard to navigate (I mean no disrespect) then I worry about you being on the internet in general. Maybe it would be best that you pay someone to setup a VM of Windows for you and that way you'll be far less likely to have any serious issue and if you get infected you can load an old VM image an just start from that point. But the ultimate thing is that whatever you did to get yourself infected with the FBI ransomware in the other thread you need to not do (or anything like it) again. The best AV in the world can not help you if you don't know how to avoid things.
