I think that Apex is better for memory OC overall from what I've seen. There's far less of us that own the Z790 Dark, so maybe over time we'll figure out quirks or there'll be more firmware releases, but at the moment the Apex seems like the better RAM OC board. I've seen one or two people getting 8800 daily stable on the Apex, and many people with 8200-8400 stable.

My max boot is 8266, I believe MrTOOSHORT's was 8400.

I'm working on stabilizing a good 8000 profile, though to be honest I was hoping for 8400ish prior to getting board (high hopes of course), but that doesn't seem possible (at least for me at the moment).

Though with my max boot being so low (unless I'm able to find a way to push it higher), I'm curious if M-die would be better for me latency wise if I can push that to 7600 with very tight timings.

@umea Thanks for the insight. They are both incredible boards! I was kinda bummed the Apex didn't have a backplate. I think all high end boards should. I have 8200 stable currently, working on 8400 right now. I can boot stupid fast speeds but it will crash after gaming for a bit. I'm not really an overclocking expert so this may be as far as I get. And yeah the latency on high speed ram sucks. So realistically these kits even tuned probably aren't that much faster in gaming. But it's a fun process. I really wonder when the next gen intel cpus will come out and hopefully they have better pressure. I am not confident enough to mess around with a contact frame.

This + DDR5 8200 + KS to beat x3d.

i agree that x3d parts are going to win FPS wise

this is paranoia tier, but my current system is my first intel system, and it does “feel” better than my 5800X3D system, just more responsive, smoother, and snappier in FPS games (even when FPS is locked to same FPS). i thought it might be placebo because ive read a lot of random ppl say this, but i always thought they were just imagining it, so idk

only thing I care about is holding 500fps in 1% lows on comp FPS games in prep for 540hz monitor, which i think my 13900KS can do just based off of preliminary testing with slow RAM profile

hoping to dial two really nice 8000 profiles, both one that pushes as far as possible and one that is looser but has no chances of random instabilities for gaming

i can pretty easily tell the difference between 144/240/360, so i think it’ll still be noticeable at least to me, especially games that require constant tracking of targets

ive used my CRT at 420hz for a very short test on diabotical (quake basically) and it felt pretty surreal

next time i upgrade system will probably be when the next step up in monitors comes out that my current rig cant handle (so probably 600-700hz+)

Ive been shooting for a Dark. Finally was able to get one last night. I really didnt want to have to get an apex.. Also have a KS sitting on my porch right now, 4090 secured months ago and a v3000+ snagged last night. So excited to finally build a no compromises maching.. Just need a few things.

I do have a question about Hynix A-die ram. Is it all the same? Can I get a 7200 kit and overclock it as much as a 76-7800 kit if I use their stock timings?

The image shows VDDQ (not VDDQ TX) at 1.25V but also shows a max value HWInfo recorded of 1.45v. does the Dark automatically adjust/fluctuate VDDQ?
