I don't know a lot about the Classy cards but I think that the other EVGA cards seem to be limited to 1.212v. The classy cards are able to go higher but I think there is a program that you need to allow higher voltage to be used. I remember seeing a "Classy.exe" file that might allow the higher voltages.

Once you can get past the voltage limitation, then a custom BIOS will make more sense.

KingPin cooling might have a Classy (X I think) bios ..... in order to read voltages you must use a digital multi meter with the board connector as software won't register properly.

Get Classy voltage tool also.

Furmark is a power virus. It is the easiest way to make your GPU throttle due to any combination of heat /lack of power, and not a good test to verify a modified BIOS overclock.

I would recommend using GPU-z logging to monitor for throttling in the games that you play. You can also monitor 3DMark Firestrike. If you don't get throttling with real games and firestrike, then I wouldn't worry much about throttling in Furmark. Furmark/Kombuster (Kombuster recommended) is an extreme test that will NOT represent real world GPU workloads at all, but DOES produce the worst case scenario with regard to throttling for most of its tests. Don't worry if you only throttle in this test

There is one Kombuster test in particular that is especially good at causing throttling. For testing: If you want to make your card throttle, just to see how quickly it does (even on water), do this: Make sure your power % slider is maxxed out to allow max power. Open MSI Afterburner and run KOMBUSTER from within MSI AB (launched with the "BIG K" in the MSI Afterburner GUI). Let it run for at least a minute. Watch for throttling, sometimes it take a minute or two if you are lucky. Most custom BIOS' will throttle almost instantly.. 300 seconds (5 minutes) is the "Torture test". Don't run it any longer than that. It is going to really stress your GPU. It is possible to prevent throttling in this test but it requires a LOT of power. The "Big K" test seems to run Kombuster with some especially demanding parameters which is why I recommend launching it this way. Plus you can use the MSI AB monitor to record the throttling (clear the results of the monitor after you start the test).

Hey, thanks for mentioning it. But still with unigine heaven and the modified bios you gave me the card will always clock at 1417,5 mhz, even with powertraget and temp maxed in precision x and +37mv or overboost at 1300mv. I thought the bios would apply a 1531 boost clock, or just if the card can handle that?

It might not be able to handle it (I wouldn't think it would handle more than my Gigabyte could TBH), but I would be interesting in seeing your GPU-z log so I can see what is going on.

Let's dig a bit deeper.

I dont think It throttled at that point, just left the vram on 0 and added +100 core for the OC one and ran unigine heaven with 1080 preset 8xAA

stock oc bios btw
Thank you, that helped. Ok I can see why you are not reaching 1531Mhz. You are voltage capped.

Since I'm not familiar with that card I don't know exactly how to unlock the voltage. Do you need an application from EVGA to unlock voltages with a CLASSIFIED card? I thought all of the CLASSIFIED cards could go beyond 1.212v

Once you can unlock the voltage (max reading will show 1.275) you will boost to 1531Mhz.

EDIT: Added SS for easier reading

It's funny because when i enable kboost and put the +37mV in PrecisionX it clocks to 1532 at the desktop, when I start unigine it instantly clocks to 1430 and then 1417. I still dont understand all of that overvolting on this card, I thouoght they were able to get higher ones bute the classified tool seems to just skyrocket my temps without doing anything for the clocks. It stays streight at 1417 no matter how high I pull the slider.

1532 at the desktop? Is this when the card is at idle or under load?

You should not be seeing 1531Mhz @ idle. Are you setting your CORE speed to 1531? That would be why. This is what GPUZ should look like.

OK, I don't use K boost but I am more familiar with it now. Just to verify, you get the same results with MSI AB (since it doesn't have K Boost) as you do with Precision X? You should have been able to add more voltage with the slider.. We are on to something.

I have edited a new BIOS for you to try. This should help with throttling but I'm still not clear why you are voltage locked. Maybe this new BIOS will work better.. I don't know but I took a look at the original BIOS I posted for you and I see a change that should help. Someone with a Classy 980 should be able to help advise as to what you need to do you remove voltage cap. Are there switches on your card?

MSI AB Config options
New BIOS (I only test with MSI AB, so I am going to reference it here)

Your voltage slider should go from +0 - +100mv in afterburner
Your power% slider should go from 100% - 150% in afterburner

Voltage is locked unless you use EVGA Precision X 16 and use the overboost feature. And it you use that it goes to the 1.4v range (for me). And that's kind of worthless unless you want to run ln2. I've been hunting for a possible limit in the BIOS and may have come across it but, no successful edits (yet).

Here is my current BIOS if you want to give it a shot.

Hey, thanks for joining the convesation!
Can I just flash your BIOS or should I change my stock t omirror your settings?

If you can stable at 1600MHz I can say it is a very very good OC

I only got 1528/1953MHz with stock voltage 1.20volt because ASUS locked it up

I agreed

I have left this torture software long time ago, most of people in this forum already said that Furmark is no good anymore, just use 3DMark 2011 or Unigine Heaven for the sake of your card.
