MicroStar International (MSI) has a series of gaming motherboards in the works and plans to show them off at CeBIT 2013 next month. The new boards will be thrust into the market to face up to the likes of the ASUS ROG and the Asrock Fatal1ty series. The MSI "G" Motherboard family's USPs will include enhanced networking capabilities and MSI "Gaming Device Ports", specially optimised for speed and durability.

The integrated Killer E2200 network chip is nice but I agree the 'gaming' USB ports thing is very gimmicky.

both are gimmicks really.

Just sounds like marketing spin to me. I'll believe MSI offer a product to compete with the ROG series when I see it. Gaming ports or enhanced network chips are just a bunch of crap to suck unsuspecting customers in.

Don't get me wrong, I would love an alternative to the ROG series in the hope it would bring prices down a bit, but I seriously doubt these boards will do much in the way of competing with the ROG series of boards. I mean, if the features they are bragging about now are this weak and basically just marketing spin, I can't really see them bringing any serious competition.

What I would really love to see is a great overclocking board with support for quad GPU setups. So I want beefy, high quality VRM's to maximise OC stability and power delivery, I want a board with a decent heatsink design to dissipate heat, and for the love of god, don't put any stupid gun-shaped/military themed heatsinks on the board! We're not 12 years old!

They don't really help with anything, they don't corrode but I've never had a non-gold connector corrode anyway

Gold is actually a relatively poor conductor, silver is better. The only benefit is that it doesn't corrode.
The only other possible benefit is that it's normally very pure so helps minimize signal change, but I doubt any company will use pure gold because it will cost a fortune.
The main reason gold is used on the end of USB cables is because people will go "oo shiny" and buy it

red usb ports mean that my keyboard and mouse will be super charged, especially when you add stripes and flames on top of them, so it will be super mega charged for ultra fast responsiveness that even superman can't detect. watch out, my level of gaming has reached two neutron stars with this feature.

lol as long they make decent boards, I could care less about the gimmicks. I'm just getting tired of the RoG Aesthetics (reminds me of fat alien whales for some reason, dont know why, im special that way). hopefully they'll make some clean lookin boards.

No. Gold on electronics is only used mainly to prevent corrosion and as Andy said, for consumer psychology reasons.

Even though this is pretty gimmicky, I hope MSI will bring quality motherboards that can compete with the ROG's.
After all, they make the Lightening series, which is damn good!

But I don't want to upgrade until I see at least 3x full PCIE 3.0 speeds and only SATA 3 on one controller.
I never understood why Intel released the socket 2011 with only 40 PCIE lines, which transfers to only max two GPU's at full speed.
For the price point I would have at least 48 lines (48/3 = 16) so you could run three cards at max, and a controller that was capable of giving at least 6x SATA3 on the intel controller, why on earth would you put SATA2 on the best motherboards available?

What would be equally nice is an enthusiast gaming board that has onboard video and audio stripped away... I haven't ever built a gaming system and relied on onboard sound (Shudder...) or onboard video. If the board is north of $200 and designed for overclocking, it is not too much of a stretch to assume that the buyer will be using a discrete video card (and hopefully) and sound card.

Also dual NIC's don't seem to get much use, just one would be nice.

It would be a change to see a motherboard manufacturer strip away all the extra crap they throw on boards in an effort to differentiate themselves form their competitors (Who are also trying to fit a kitchen sink on their motherboard).

I'm gonna paint racing stripes down my car, it'll be faster too! And flames on the fenders! It'll be unstoppable!!
