I was very interested in the GRE as an upgrade path for my Aging Vega 64. But with all this locking down shenanigans I cant really support amd. They used to be enthusiast king but they have locked down the 7000 series so much.

Guess I'm going to keep the Vega kicking and wait and see what Battlemage offers us. At least Arc's can be overclocked. Who knew than Intel would be the last bastion of enthusiast GPU overclocking

AMD has confirmed that the limited overclocking on the 7900GRE is a bug and will be fixed soon.
Hmm will have to see how far that gets the enthusiasts. Vega 64 disappoints me on the OC front. With a full cover block I have the cooling power to cool way more than the 1250mv that the LC bios gives me but I can't exceed it in any meaningful way with software. When MPT and RBE started doing great things for Navi 1 and 2 I started to get excited again about the future of OC'ing but RBE and MPT are still blocked on Navi3. So whatever AMD gives us is simply there choice and they won't give us enough to catch a 7900XT. I am almost sure of that.

While i agree the 33% increase in CU with proper memory speeds should net more than we’re seeing. A measly 10% uplift over the 7800xt in the best case scenario just doesn’t add up. I think it’s intentional market segmentation rather than poor quality silicon.
Yeah the 7900GRE is very reminiscent of the olD HD7870xt, Which was a cut down tahiti die, that you would normally find in the much quicker 7950's and 70s except it was masquerading a tier down as a 7870. The difference here is 7870XT was a decent chip with decent OC capabilities. Where it seems 7900GRE is far more limited by artificial limits put on it.
