Today marks another turning point in the world of power supply efficiency. First, we had 80 Plus Standard certification. Then came the Olympic levels - Bronze, Silver, and Gold. 80 Plus didn't stop there, however, and now we have Platinum. My first Platinum certified unit goes under the microscope today - the modular Kingwin LZP-550. Does the ultra high efficiency come at the cost of decreased performance? Let's not wait another minute to find out.

at least not at that price

Considering what you get? I would say it's a hard bargin but close to worth it.
You have to remember that MSRP values are almost never followed on sites like Newegg.

I would expect to see this unit sell fro around $140-150. Which is in-line with what you would pay for an HX520 a few years back.

More so, this unit is MORE THAN enough for most rigs on OCN.

That would definitely be the big elephant in the room.

Though I have a feeling that this will be like the OCZ Z Series units, initial price at launch is gonna look high. But once more Platinum contenders make it to the market; things will settle for them.

Don't worry, I lawled too.

I wish Kingwin would have provided a 650w load table.

170, is what my X650 was at the time of JG writing his review of it. I picked it up for 107 a couple of months ago

Remember 2 things:
It's brand new (so prices will fall)
MSRP is never followed by Newegg.

Yep, both OCZ's Z Series Gold and Seasonic's X-Series were expensive at launch.

750w was $200 MSRP for the X-750.

It may be an 80+ Platinum unit that performs well but I can't see why anyone would choose this over say a SeaSonic X650 or X560(both cheaper).

Sorry for bump but I always have to post when I see something like this. I can't stand that people buy into efficiency. Even when the price drops(it's dropped to $160 since this thread was made) it still won't be worth it IMO.

I enjoy reading Oklahoma's reviews immensely. He has a great way of making it both entertaining and informative.

On-topic - Looks like a solid unit, price withstanding.
What ever happened to the airplane style modular connectors?

This unit performs better than those two, and is even more quiet.

More quiet? The Seasonic X are fanless below 20% and then almost inaudible till around 60-70% load.

I'd say its a lot to pay for a 550w PSU and almost definitely not worth it.

A fan would not short out your entire rig and cause damage unless you were running a crappy PSU and connected something wrong.

Not to sound rude, but this error is 100% PEBKAC.

This thing can be fanless up to 70% load or potentially higher. It also has tighter voltage regulation on the 3.3v, 5vsb, -12v, & 5v rail. The Sesaonic X-Series platform lets that slide.

Even at full load; it's a good 5dB(A) less than the Seasonic's 70% load state.

To top it off, it can output 650w reliably and be as efficient as the X-660 & X-650.
