Hello.
I've recently purchased a new PSU for my PC and I've wanted to try overclocking my CPU to try and improve my pc's performance in games.
I've spent around a week preparing for it, and today when I tried to overclock it to 3.0Ghz on my base voltage (1.25000V) my pc didn't start and the settings reset to the old ones after I turned it back on.
I've tried using higher voltage, but it didn't change anything, the maximum I could reach was 2.90Ghz which I don't think is that much better than stock.

Does anyone know what I could do? I've seriously no idea what I could try at this point and looking up old forum posts and youtube videos isn't really helping that much

Here are my specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @2.83Ghz
Motherboard: Gigabyte G41M-ES2L
RAM 1: Kingston 2GB DDR2 400MHz
RAM 2: Kingston 4GB DDR2 400MHz
Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34
PSU: Cooler Master V850 850W 80+ Gold

Please tell me if I need to give anymore info, I'm still a complete newbie so I'm sorry if there's something missing here.

Go look up any Core 2 Duo overclocking guide, it's literally same story. Just asking this barebone motherboard to handle Q9550 is asking A LOT.

G41m is a terrible chipset for overclocking.... Set the vtt to 1.35 cpu vcore to 1.3 bump the chipset voltages a few notches and set fsb to 400. Also you need to change your memory strap too to lower the ram speeds.

Check my cpu-z validation for 3.3Ghz with a Q6600 : Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3303.1 MHz - CPU-Z VALIDATOR
I was able to do 3.6Ghz bu i didn't do the validation
My Q6600 this is also one OC animal, my DDR3 does a great job too.
But CPU Top speed this is not important when productivity applications they do crash and games does not.
My sweet spot this is at 2.6GHz but I will go there only when this is required by my new GPU GTX 1660 super or better.
Wiser use of OC this is minimizing any bottleneck if you own a much modern and faster GPU.
