Hi,

This is an entry level card for 1080P according to reviewers and there are 6GB models along with 8GB versions as well. There is a very narrow 128 bit memory bus - If members here could comment on the capability of the 8GB versions to use all 8GB - Is this possible? - I've not used any of these yet so information on this is appreciated - Thanks

i suggest look the other way from such GPU's, don't know why they even exist, they should be banned.

I'm sure there are situations where the 8GB could be well-utilized; looking at some 8GB GPUs of similar performance (GTX 1070, Vega56) they can make use of their VRAM. And with VRAM (RAM in general) it's better to have "too much" than not enough as the performance ramifications of running out are rather nasty- stuttering, LOD issues, just a bad time. Not saying that's guaranteed on 6GB in that performance tier (really depends on which games and what settings used) but it's not inconsequential.

The bigger issue with the 6GB 3050 is it's really a "3050" in name only- not only is the memory bus cut down from 128bit to 96bit, but it has fewer shaders (2304 as opposed to 2560) and fewer TMUs (72 instead of 80) so even in situations where 6GB of VRAM is plenty, performance of the 6GB version will be substantially lower than the "real" 8GB model.

Either way, RTX 3050 (including 8GB version) has never been a good value. There are better choices in that price range like Radeon 6600, Arc A580, and used cards like RTX 2060 Super, Radeon 5700/XT etc.

sell you my 3060 12 gig, it is defiantly able to do 1440 and so on and overclocked amazing as the pads and gpu have been modified to the best there is at the moment minus liquid cooling. yea and 2995 in 3d mark and so on in afterburner so yea its fast and not power hungry.

Hi - FWIW - I do have some AMD GPU's as well - Please don't think I've ignored them.

The arena is further complicated with the 6GB only having 96 bit bus - And the 8GB version has 128 bit bus?

Hello "scrane" above - Maybe you may wish to keep your 3060 12GB ? - Unless you have more than one? - Sometimes it's good to have a GPU or two just in case?

It's more misleading product segmentation by Nvidia where they use the same product branding yet there is more that is different between the two models besides just 6GB vs 8GB. The 6GB is a slower card than the 8GB because of both the cutdown memory and memory bus, but also the reduction in cuda cores.

If you are looking for something on the cheap I can report that I recently got two 3060 12GB Asus Dual V2s for kids in my neighborhood. It's fine for Farming Simulator/Roblox at 1440p as the kids are wont to do. This particular model has to have PTM on the die as the hotspot delta on both kept at 10 degrees. The card is a bit hot though because of small size (which makes it fit in repurposed office boxes if you can upgrade the PSU + add a case fan), still with a bit of UV + OC you can keep it at 70/80C and have fun. I might get a third soon as my friends kid seems to be outgrowing his 960 4GB and the parents want to keep it at 1080p for a while longer.

OK - Still on the topic of Nvidia GPU's - But looking at the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB - Still using the 128 bit bus - Would this narrow bus memory architecture prevent the full use of the 16GB VRAM? - I really don't know the answer to this - And there is much talk of how terible the RTX 4060 is/was - But if all 16GB could be used when it is needed then that maybe really useful / "slight future proof" - Thanks

I think there were features on Hardware Unboxed and other well known channels that had this problem discussed. I imagine they are easy to find. TLDR is that in case of games that are known to need lots of VRAM the 16GB version has a substantial advantage. The trouble is that the 16GB versions are a lot more expensive and the uplift may not justify the price.

The Price is in fact the factor that spoil these cards as otherwise in perf/watt metric they are actually quite impressive.
