Hi

I'm working with PS3 as a desktop computer ( it is working hard doing mathematical calculations ) and I'm quite surprised about overclocking results in some machines.

Anybody knows if it is possible to overclock PS3 Cell Processor? And if it is possible, how to do it?

Thanks in advance.

I highly doubt you can..but maybe just maybe...if you could use clockgen through linux on the ps3...actually coming to think of it its some custom chipset isnt it?..nah i think its impossible.

If you overclock it, it will overheat (more likely than not).

I just came up with a theory: They both have the word "over" in them... THE GOVERNMENT!

I had to do that.

Console known for overheating ??

In confined spaces and some display booths without adequate circulation maybe, but other than that, I have not heard of the PS3 overheating.

The PS3 isn't known for overheating. You must be confusing it with the XBOX 360.

And yeah, you probably can't overclock it. If you knew what the PLL in it was, you could possibly use ClockGen.

can you really install and OS on the PS3 and maybe play CS:S or something like that? I'd like to try because i know with the USB ports the keyboard and mouse would work...right?

There is a variety of Linux that will work on the PS3, and I suppose it might be possible to run CS:S through WINE...

Interesting...so you're using the ps3 as a desktop or are you doing something crazy?
I'm assuming you used the optional OS install and have yellow dog or something. If so you may notice it having trouble do computational things b/c (if i remember correctly) only 1 core/cell is assigned to the 3rd party OS.

Now if they unlocked all processors running linux, i would be the first in line for that powerhouse of a media centre!

why would you whant to use a ps3 as a desktop? or even OC it for that matter.with out hardcore programing (done buy devs (or at lease some)) the PS3 is nothing more than a low end PC,about as fast as a P4 and a 7900GTX.there is no reson to waste a bunch of time trying to turn any console PS3 or 360 in to a desktop.just save up some money and get a real PC.

is there any reason behind bumping 1/2 year old threads?

And it has a special chipset so it will be lock for sure.

Why? Because this isn't stockclock.net, this is Overclock.net. The end

No - not just because its overclock.net.
Its because overclocking the CPU will fail to do ANYTHING.

3/4 of all games have FPS caps, increasing the CPU clock will not increase the FPS past that cap. Also, half the time - the FPS doesn't decrease far from that cap unless its under extreme activity. Increasing the clock would probably barely help it.
Not to mention, overclocking the CPU won't improve any Folding@Home at all because its done via the GPU.

Lets not forget the fact that the PS3's CPU is no ordinary CPU. Overclocking the CPU may not be the same.

Overclocking the CPU on the PSP on the other hand is a different story considering its a 233Mhz CPU.

Now - its The End.

The PS3 is not known for overheating. Not in the least.

If you could somehow overclock the Cell processor in there, my guess is that bad things would happen either trying to do it or while it was happening.

EDIT: lol wow this thread has been brought back from the dead.

Someone above posted about running steam through linux and wine on the ps3. Has anyone tried this? It would be pretty awesome...
