Hey guys, I recently built an x79 system and I'm planning on upgrading my memory but I'm unsure of what route to go. I have to option to get either dual or quad channel memory and I'm wondering how much of a real world difference I'll see. My main uses for the computer are gaming and streaming along with video editing.

If you're talking about the kits that your purchase, Quad Channel kits are just tested together for compatibility [same as dual channel are tested together vs. a single stick] - if you're running your setup with a full complement of memory, its going to be running in quad channel.

As for the real world advantages, probably not a huge amount as its more for number crunching and the likes, but obviously every bit counts, and its always nice to have all those slots nice and full

Yeah, my board only has 4 dimms and it'd be nice to have those full of dominator platinum, but that crap is expensive

If you can afford it, Quad Channel has approximately double the raw bandwidth of Dual Channel on X79. The flip side to that is that memory bandwidth is rarely the bottleneck in common everyday tasks or gaming. If you are running a RAMDISK, large memory mathematical calculations, or running a large number of virtual machines - the Quad Channel really shows it's strength.

Hopefully, you're running a 3930K or 4930K or another hex-core CPU on that X79. The only advantage X79 has over it's Socket 1155/1150 brethren is Quad Channel, Hex Core availability, and 40 Lanes. You might as well be using all three. =)

I'm running a 3930k. I picked it up from a buddy from intel retail edge a few years ago. He hadn't even opened the box and sold it to me for 150. I do a lot of streaming and the extra 2 cores have made a world of a difference. I plan on picking up another 970 pretty soon and running sli because one 970 isn't really cutting it at 1440p. How much of a difference is the actual frequency of the ram going to make overall?

I think DDR3-1866 or 2133 is the sweet spot on a 3930K, with as low a latency as you can afford. I ran Crucial Ballistix Elite 1866 CL9 on my 3930K before I upgraded to X99. My wife's using it now and has no idea what a sweet ride she inherited. =)

Lol, does she even use it for anything intensive or is it a 6 core beastly facebook machine?

I certainly hope she appreciates how good of a husband you are.
