Tom's Hardware 4870 X2 Review

Quote:
Although AMD took the hardware community by surprise with the performance of RV770 and the derivative Radeon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon HD 4850/4870, things didn’t go entirely according to plan. The company launched its boards immediately after Nvidia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia , which turned around and slashed the prices on its own models, determined to win this round of the ongoing graphics card war.

And yet, a month and a half after the launch of AMD’s newest round of products, the verdict hasn’t changed. Neither the GeForce GTX http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_9_Series 260 nor the GeForce 9800 GTX+ (only recently made available) can take on the Radeon HD 4870 with regards to price or performance, even in light of heavy cuts from Nvidia.

Zoom

But AMD’s not out just to make waves with the gamers looking for value. It also wants to reclaim a crown it lost a long time ago to Nvidia’s last two generations of large, monolithic programmable graphics architectures. As a means to that end, the company is putting a pair of its most impressive GPUs on a single PCB and calling it the Radeon HD 4870 X2. Now the question remains: does the new board have the muscle to take on Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 280, the single fastest card?

Good thing I started saving up for this card a while back..

Example: Check Crysis http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon...w-crossfire/12 and http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...md,1992-5.html

I smell some biased reviews....
I believe Crysis was made or optimized for nvidia cards so any Crysis benchmark nvidia will have the lead. But if you take some other games benches I think the 4870 x2 wins most if not all.

Huh they had the 4870x2 beating the 280GTX in ever benchmark except Crysis and GRAW2

I know Crysis was optmized for nVidia but in the Tom's HW review the 4870 x2 beats the 280GTX while other reviews show the opposite.

After reading their RV770 reviews i wouldn't say that for sure.

That's because of newer drivers.

Well, the 4870 X2 is close enough to the performance of the GTX 280 that I will not regret going with the GTX 280, since I trust nVidia more. The GTX 280+ will surely do great against the 4870 X2 if this review is accurate in showing what the 4870 X2 has to offer vs the GTX 280.

I'm with you all the way Green Team. Soldier on!

Me 2! but I think ATI has done an amazing job this round and has clearly taken the performance crown.

In that case, how powerful must HD4870X2 be?

Very nice work ATI. However i see some flaws in this...my 8800GT does 110fps in GRID at 1680x1050

just wait until Cat 8.8's (i almost feel bad about getting a second 4870.....my upgrade path has hit a wall, lol)

at least aftermarket cooling and overclocking 2 separate cards will be easier

Been saving for an upgrade for a while myself. I've had nvidia cards for some time now, I was going to get a gtx280, but this ati card is top class for an upgrade. I don't think the rumors going around that nvidia chips are failing are helping nvidia much as far as competing.

I'm pretty sure Guru3D are nvidia "lovers". Just check the conclusion of their review, where they talk about how they prefer single gpus over dual gpu solutions, and come up with what I would consider, shaky reasons against it.

I believe the guru3D review did Crysis at medium settings, while Toms had it at "max detail."

Yea, I went through guru3D's last night and saw that. Why the hell would you bench the new ultra-high end cards on medium???

Ah that could be it

Well at least the war is on!!! and this means prices will lower and nVidia will come out with a new solution to beat ATI. Competition FTW!!!

Ha ha, amazing. A dual-GPU card has trouble with keeping up with a single GPU card.

Although, you can see that in all the 30" screen benchmarks the 4870x2 does win. But most people don't have screens that size.

Although, they did no 22" benchmarks, which is a common monitor size, why on earth they did 23" is beyond me.

Still, with the huge price drop in the GTX280, ATI will struggle to keep this priced lower than that, and if they launch it at a higher price, the GTX 280 will still be the best choice for people running 24" or less displays.

Did you even read the article? Its on average 25% faster and tops out at over 50%. Why would someone buy this card if they didn't have a 30" screen. ATI shouldn't have a big problem dropping the price. The biggest limiting factor would be the price of GDDR5. Also considering the price of the 4870 some may consider that a better buy bang for buck.
Heres an Hexus.net review.

Our performance evaluation shows that the HD 4870 X2 only comes into its own when the resolution is cranked up to 2,560x1,600, along with serious image quality; anything lower and it's sat there, twiddling bemused transistors.

Such is the performance lead at the WQXGA setting, that it's over 60 per cent faster than the previous champ, GeForce GTX 280, in both Race Driver: GRID and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. A 50 per cent lead in Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts and 30 per cent advantage in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is nothing to sniff at either.

I looked at the charts, and it seemed that the GTX280 was faster at lower resolutions, but at higher resolutions... like 24" and up the 4870x2 would win.

I have a 22" monitor, so if this comes out and is over $450 then I will probably end up getting the GTX280.
