Disappointing... slower than the 6850 for the price of a 6870?

 

The HD 7770 is quite a bit slower than a GTX 560 in almost every game Anandtech tested...and GTX 560 can be had in the $150-160 range new.

IMO, prices on the HD 7770 need to drop into the $125 range to make it more competitive. At the $150 price range, the GTX 560 makes much more sense than an HD 7770.

Might have found my budget card for the little machine I made for my siblings.

GTX 560 or AMD 6870 > AMD 7770

AMD 7770 is 18% less performance of the 560 / 6870. If your sporting one 560 or 6870 already and were waiting for the AMD 7770, wait no longer, forget it. Your much better off to SLI the 560 or Crossfire the 6870 and stick with your current card.

Yea the card is designed for a naive market. It wouldnt be so bad if they were 2gb models.

 

At first glance somewhat disappointing results. I was looking forward to 7770 hoping it would be the new king of bang-for-buck. I mean ok - performance is good-enough-for-getting-the-job-done but price kinda sucks considering the competing offers around that price point.

We'll see if the price drops after the launch into a range that corresponds to the performance better or AMD manages to release some new drivers making this card uber.

 

You guys are surprised that they're overpriced on a priceerformance basis? You must be new here. Admittedly, it's silly that if you base it on a price/die size basis, the 7950 is a better value or at least as good of a value. AMD's target MSRP is probably $95 and $129 for them, after they've been out for a few weeks.

What sort of creatures would "upgrade" from 6800 series to 7700 series? At best they'd tie, anyone could tell you that. (ie would you go from GTX 480 to 570? No.)

I have a feeling their best 'bang for the buck' card will come with the 7850 & 7870's.

 

Disappointing performance -- I was hoping it would match the 6850 at least. I wish the old rumour of 896/832 SPs ended up being true. Horrible pricing as well.

I was thinking that with each card doing one better than the previous gen version, the 7700 card would be just a bit better than the 6870/560. Just like the 7950 is a bit better than one tier higher of previous gen 6970/580 card. This one missed that mark of one showmanship.

So what you're not happy about is that going from a 6870 to a 7770 isn't a sidegrade, and it's actually a slight downgrade? My guess is that the 7770 has 640 SP's so it can Crossfire with Trinity graphics. Anyways, x800 series is the new midrange (has been since 6800 series), so I'm still confused why everyone is whining so much, as if you'd even consider a 7700 series card, or a Nvidia 650 Ti or whatever.

 

Awesome performance/watt. REALLY awesome. TERRIBLE performance/dollar.

Now we just wait for Kepler so that AMD is willing to drop prices to something reasonable...

Price needs to come down. Other than power consumption, what do these cards have that the 6850 or 6870 don't at the moment?

AMD, you're getting close to pricing yourself out of competitiveness in this market. Considering that Nvidia has a lot more marketshare, that's very dangerous.

Agreed. Right now, enthusiasts should not buy the 7770 or 7750. Well, MAYBE the 7750 since it can fill the niche market for gaming-level graphics sans power connector.

It's all down to pricing when Kepler is released, IMO. AMD is pricing their latest cards high because they're the early bird this round. Nvidia has done the same in the past.

Umm what? AMD has more discrete graphics marketshare than nvidia does at the moment. Where did you get that from?

In terms of total graphics marketshare, nvidia are behind both amd AND Intel.

Why would you use JPR when you can get the information straight from gamers themselves?

 

Just for giggles and whatnot, compare the laptop 6990M to the desktop 7770. The 6990M is just a downclocked 6870 (715mhz vs 900mhz). That's about 28% slower, and it has a 100W TDP. The 7770 has an 80W TDP at 1000mhz. They could pretty much drop a 7770 into a 6990M laptop, call it a 7850M, and be done with it... while bringing more performance and 20% lower TDP. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gtx-580m-sli-hd-6990m-crossfire,3022-2.html

Steam is only a certain % of PC users. Not only that, only a certain % of Steam users are even prompted to take the survey. I myself haven't had the option for a couple of years now. Sample size etc.

A sample of true gamers that use hardware needed to play games. Almost any statistic posted here is going to be a sample size which will be generally accepted as correct. The difference between what you posted and what I posted is that the article you posted is one that shows a market trend based on what most people see/buy on impulse. The steam hardware survey is a much more accurate picture because it shows what gamers are using at this time and isn't dependent just on what they have bought recently. Apples to Oranges.

You can argue if you wish, but if you want to see which companies are commanding the gamer market, especially in terms of video cards and processors, check the steam hardware survey.

That's a pretty good indication of what sells in the market, especially when it comes to video cards.

But gamers aren't the only people who buy graphics cards. Do you actually think nvidia or AMD care what kind of person buys their GPUs? It doesnt matter lol. OEM computers sell far more than discrete GPU packages. And many people who buy OEM machines wouldn't even play games, they'd have a console.

And as I said, only a certain % of people on Steam are given the option to take the survey. Even less actually do it.
