Millions asked for it, and Microsoft is providing it: the old Start Menu is coming back. Kind of. At its Build conference today, Microsoft announced a new Start Menu that looks like a hybrid of the best of Windows 7 and Windows 8. It's around the same size as the Windows 7 menu, but also features miniature Live Tiles along one side.

As long as I can use that style start menu at my desktop but force the Windows button to show the full-screen start menu on my Surface Pro, we'll be happy.

The Windows 8/8.1 style start screen works great for a touchscreen like the Surface and I would hate to have to navigate this new menu on a touchscreen.

I hope this is optional. The start screen is perfect for me; I don't need to pretend I'm using Windows 7 in order to enjoy Windows 8.
These! Agreed!

If they remove something you like, you simply don't have to buy and use it.

A proper start menu and the ability to run Win 8 apps in the desktop environment inside their own windows. Yes!! They took their sweat time but it looks like M$ got their head out of their behinds and will give their users what they want.

the full-screen Start Menu and apps will still be around for those who want them.

A major Windows 8.1 update is coming later this month, but neither of the new features will make it into that refresh. They're likely to be a major selling point for the next version of Windows, thought to be called Windows 9.
That part of the article probably needs posting.

So they're giving users the choice of either the win8 metro start menu or the one pictured in the OP.

And these new features are most likely going to be for win9

I hope this is an optional update... I've gotten used to working with the start screen in windows 8.1, and windows 7 just looks old and un-appealing. The taskbar is there for a reason, and people can just pin their most used apps to that, i don't know why that is too hard for people to do...

Finally! Something I actually see myself using.

Although I would rather have the option to completely remove any trace of the tiled interface, hopefully that will be an option. If not then I'll stick to using StartIsBack.

WOOHOO! I will finally have a reason to upgrade to W8 now! To all the people who said that MS would never, ever listen to feedback and do this, please eat a healthy dish of CROW. The people spoke and the people is what pays MS's bills. Finally they dug their heads out of their butts and listened!

Too little, too late. If M$ had come out with this when Win 8 came out, I would have invested in copies of it instead of Win 7. I purchased three retail copies of Win 7 (only one is in use on my desktop machine; my notebook is using the OEM that came with it) once I saw what a disaster Win 8 was and I see no sense in replacing any of them with anything else until either I can no longer get compatible hardware or shortly before support ends early in 2020, especially since it meets my needs.
