I just built my system in Feb. It was a budget build at the time. Even though I have money now to upgrade, I won't now that I'm going to college, I see no reason to upgrade. I won't bring my computer with me (my brother will use it) and will only use it when I come home during breaks. Plus I only game at 1440x900 so the 460 will be fine for years to come.

 

I think I'll be holding out until the next architecture.
Console ports or not, still a lot of demand for GPU power.

 

Who cares about the new consoles? They never have top of the line equipment in them anyways.

 

I don't really care about consoles, but I guess I have to since everything is ported over from them to pc. So consoles are basically the "standard" and games that require a lot more gpu won't be pushed until next gen consoles get here.

 

I'm actually pretty content with my cards for now, but at my res I'm sure they won't last me anywhere near 5 years

I'm not planning on upgrading until 2nd gen Kepler at the earliest though.

 

I doubt the next gen consoles will put any of us to that much shame.

If they put out as much as one of my 580's i'll be impressed.

 

The new consoles from Microsoft and sony MIGHT have a 5770/5830 equivalent. Wouldn't really be much reason to lean towards better graphics because a Radeon 10,000+ Series would be out by then. A jump from the current GFX system in the PS3/Xbox 360 to a 5830 equivalent would be a HUGE jump for the console gamers.

ps3 was released 6 years after the ps2 launched. So if the ps3 launched in 2006, the ps4 release date if going by history, would be imminent...within the next 2 years.

So if the ps3 had the equivalent desktop gpu of a 7900gtx. And in 2006, the top desktop graphics card was an 8800gtx, which basically had a big massive generational performance gap over the 7000 series gpu.

This same performance gap appears to be rearing it's head in the cuda gpu road map for Maxwell in 2013.

So it would be my hunch that the ps4 launches by 2013, and have Kepler's mid-range performance...which could be as fast as a GTX580.

Edit: Judging by this, I wold probably have to upgrade by 2013. Of course if a good deal comes along that goes out the window,

Of course! As much as I love my 460s right now they will be way inferior in at least 2 years, and when new consoles come out, then for sure I might buy a new gpu. gtx 880 !!

 

well im upgrading to SB soon so i will get a second gtx 560 ti untill kepler comes out get 2 high end of those then my 560s can go into a dedicated folding rig

 

i really want to upgrade my gpu to something with the second dig being 8. just waiting for the right deal to come along.

 

Yeah, I am, especially since I'd need a CPU upgrade (which itself is doing more than fine for me right now) before thinking about substantially more powerful GPUs compared to what I have or more RAM or whatever.

 

With 2X 6970's in Cross-Fire I do not think I will have update these bad boys for quite some time...

 

I plan on keeping my 460 for a while... I don't game as much anymore, and I'm going to be putting more money towards school and a car rather than computers.

Oh, and the next upgrade I'm getting is an SSD.

I upgrade when I see enough games that can benefit from a upgrade. That been said I was hoping my 4890 CF would last until kepler but as there are a lot of games that wont run with all the candy I'm tempted to pick up a 570

 

I vote for none of the above options. I'll upgrade when I fell I I need to or fancy it if there's a an exceptional deal. If next gen gpu's came out and were getting 2x fps against my card (equivelent price range) then i'd buy one. Consoles wouldn't factor into the eqation in any way shape or form.

Not every games a console port, it's mostly mainstream consumer junk (like cod), and especially, terrible film spin-offs that look terrible even by console standards.
