Around Christmas I'm getting an i7, mobo, ram, and a new cooler.

With that, I'm going to be taking my 720, mobo, ram, and current cooler and be using it for my backup rig. Well, the old backup case would most definitely not fit my mobo.

I've seen many threads about people building a PC in a motherboard box/on cardboard.. And I'm just wondering if it's really safe.

This well be a 24/7 rig as one of my closest friends plays on the backup rig.

Cheers.

From an electrical standpoint it's perfectly safe to run the MB on cardboard; in fact, a MB box is the cheapest tech station you can get. The downsides are that add-in cards (e.g. graphics card) are not securely mounted, wiring is usually a lot messier, and due to the exposed nature it's more prone to damage.

Agree 100%. I even have a fancy mouse pad to go along with the high end tech station.

Or if you want to get really fancy, use the box that the mb box came in .
