I was measuring how much space my RAM would take up in my case with a measuring tape that had a magnetic tip/end. As I was placing the tip near the RAM slot, it stuck itself to a silver cap on the motherboard. I removed it immediately and the computer was off when it happened. Could I have damaged anything?

As long as you don't have a strong neodymium magnet covering your motherboard for a lengthy time.... of a month or more, then you should be fine. Now the quest begins to find a big enough neodymium magnet to fit over the motherboard...

If you deliberately wanna kill your motherboard then go ahead.

Hey y'all, don't give advice if you don't know what you're talking about.

Magnetic fields will mess with your hard drive, that's it. A powerful magnetic field might mess with some of the circuits in your mobo while it's in operation, but it certainly won't cause any permanent damage.

I have to agree with this guy, the only thing magnets will affect is mech HDDs. tho it takes one hell of a magnet so i wouldnt even worry about HDDs and magnets such as magnetic screwdrivers.

Sorry, seems I forgot the /sarcasm/ tags again. Sigh.

And did you even read my post? I said it wouldn't hurt it.

I answered Sharks post by the way, and I know it takes a strong magnet to kill your components, magnetized screwdriver won't do anything to them.
