I had more of a think on it and realized I could add a 240mm aio, and fairly easily, by virtue of using the matx board. This gave enough room to mount the rad next to the psu but with enough of a gap to allow air in from the expansion slots and from the 120mm case fan. So, I snagged a corsair h100i platinum on a prime day deal and installed it. Side benefit is that it also feeds a ton of air to the video card, and coolant temp is only about 5C above the case temp at full load (~40C) so the card runs cooler with lower fan rpms than before.

The system is overall quieter under load as the fans don't need to go much over 1500rpm to keep the cpu cool, where the noctua air cooler would ramp up under load and be fairly audible. It should have enough cooling capacity for the WX chips now, and also allowed me to mount my 2nd hdd back in it's original spot below the bd drive.

Hello everyone, glad to see this Club! Owner of the trusty old GD01 here. Small issue: the front panel USB/smartcard latch has stopped working, added a small video below.

No visible signs of damage. Is there a way to fix/replace this or I'd better start looking for a brand new case? Thank you. :)

Running Title "Synth Rider"

-The goal of this build was to make something powerful without any need for overclocking, virtual reality games are the prime use of this computer but I really wanted the flexibility to stream and do 3D modeling. Coming from an i5 7600k @ 4.6ghz / GTX 1080 I wanted a noticeable performance and multitasking capability.. powering virtual reality smoothly on most games and settings isnt an easy goal to achieve with a budget build especially when you are powering a valve index so I tried to weigh in being as budget conscious as I could be given the circumstances.-

I picked the GD09 for this build because its uncommon but conventional form factor as well as its payload capacity, giving me enough room to fit just about any component I want and cooling capacity for said components. The exterior design is done with wood adhesive wrap and gold vehicle pin striping I cut and formed to my liking, about 25$ in materials and ive got alot left over.. may end up clear coating for longevity and durability.

For ventilation I have the rear 2x 80mm & 1x 120 Fan as intake, 2x front 120mm as exhaust and run a hybrid cooling power to noise ratio.

In the cooling the department for components ive decided to keep it stock seeing as there are nominal returns for overclocking the ryzen chips and going that route would save me money on aftermarket cooling and premium overclocking board. My Temps (cpu) 35-72c / (gpu) 40-74c running a custom fan profile for ryzen and no overclock on the gpu.

Going on to power as a veteran builder I know not to cheap out with power supplies, Fortunately seasonic has a 650w sfx power supply that comes with a standard atx bracket giving me the versatility to use this in smaller build down the road and give me some much needed cable management room in this case. *Note I highly recommend getting extension cables if you use this power supply on full atx builds as the cables are sfx style length. Defiantly didn't save myself any money here but it was well spent.

I have few questions to Grandia GD08 case owners

Currently I have Antec Fusion Remote HTPC case, but I want to put bigger GPU (Asus ROG Strix GTX 1660 Super) this card will not fit into my Antec Fusion Case.

Question is about airflow in Grandia GD08, how often you clean dust filters, does this case is design to have only intake fans ?
Does this positive airflow is good option, does not collect too much dust inside ? for example my Antec Fusion have only two 120mm exhaust no any intake and there is almost suprisgly no dust inside after ~year

Also I'm worry about optical drive front cover flaps, I read that are problems with them, people say that they can stuck and not open.
I'm using Pioneer BDR-209EBK drive.

For me better option be standard 5,25 covers for drive, and then I can always mount for example 5,25 card reader, fan controller etc.

How do you think worth to upgrade from Antec Fusion Remote to this GD08 ? or better search for smaller GPU ?
Any maybe news about new HTPC cases from Silverstone ?

Thank you.

Hi everyone

I'm thinking of getting the GD09 and installing a 3950X in it. Has anybody done this? Trying to figure out if I can fit a decent air cooler for this CPU (no overclocking) or even an AIO but not sure if there are any that fit without modding the case.

Any tips would be appreciated, thanks.

I haven’t done a 3950X but have overclocked an X5680 and an X5690 in a GD05 and also have a GD09.

I put a 240 radiator on the outside right side of my GD09 with the fans inside. There are pics earlier in the thread. Required modding the case by cutting holes for the tubes to enter at the right rear side. The GD05 has a similar config but with the tubes entering front right.

Someone with a micro atx motherboard in a GD09 has put a 240 inside in the vacant PCIe area which would otherwise be occupied by a full ATX motherboard. Again pictures earlier in the thread. This option doesn’t require modding the case.

I think there are some 120 rad examples (maybe for GPU AIOs) as well.

I think I saw someone with an ultra slim 120 RAD and slim fans inside on the right but the fans were raised and over the motherboard. This was inside without modding.

My GD05 with the external 120 has been fine for years and the GD09 has been reliable too.

Airflow is in with 3 120s at the sides and out with an 80mm in the left rear position. The AIO tubes interfere with the 80mm fan position in the right rear so it can’t be used.

If I was putting a 3950X in a GD09 I would investigate modding the case to use a 120 AIO on the outside right. It’s an easy enough mod and it doesn’t look too bad, just adding the extra width of the radiator to the size of the case.

One potential problem with having the tubes enter on the right rear is that the lower one may interfere with the IO area of the motherboard. I had to remove the plastic cover from that area of my X99 deluxe.

I think the micro ATX option with the 120 AIO in the spare space is a neat solution too. I guess you could go ITX for even more internal space.

Thanks! Very useful info. If I want to go the air cooling route do you know any air coolers that would fit the case and handle the 3950X?

Thanks
It looks challenging. Noctua have the NH-L12S which may interfere with the RAM or HDD and might not be quite enough to sustain running at the base clock rate.

Are you going to put in an optical drive or any HDDs? If you are not then you can leave out the drive bracket which will allow a wider choice of air coolers and it ought to be possible to find one.

Maybe someone else with more experience using the case with air coolers can help you with air cooling options.

Edit: Noctua C14S would leave you with 1 HDD bay: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/644747-best-air-cooler-for-gaming-rig-in-htpc-gd09b-case/

Awesome thanks! hadnt seen that. So, it looks like the two best/easiest options are the air cooling with the C14S without a tp fan, or watercooling with a 240mm and an itx mobo. Of the two which one do you think will give me the best temps?

Thanks
Pretty sure the best CPU temps would be from modding the case and putting the 240 rad on the RHS 🙂. That way the rad gets fresh air and the flow rate is fairly high.

Of the two options you are interested in, it’s not obvious to me which would be best. The Noctua cooler would be well placed and would have the right fin orientation for the two 120 inlet fans right next to it and the airflow in that half of the case works well with the outlet 80mm fans at the back.

A 240 AIO ought to outperform the Noctua cooler but positioned in the middle of the case it’ll be harder to get fresh air to it. You might have to experiment with different fan directions to get the best performance. Maybe try airflow from right to left through the rad in the middle.

You need a shortish PSU to fit a 120 fan on the LHS of the case. Also that area tends to fill up with cable clutter which blocks airflow through the middle of the case.

If you are not overclocking and not modding the case I think both options will work and it depends on whether you want an ATX motherboard and lose the drive bays or ITX and keep the bays. You can get 2 HDDs, 4 SSDs and a slot loading slimline optical drive in that area with the adapter bay from Silverstone. You’d lose that capability with the big air cooler there.

You could try the ITX option with the rad in the middle and if it didn’t work well enough mod the case and put the rad on the RHS. If you end up doing that though you’d have been better off deciding to mod the case up-front and getting an ATX board.

Thanks again for all this super useful info, I really appreciate it. I've thought about what you say and, given that I don't have any need for a DVD drive or hard drive, I might try the Noctua cooler first to see what happens. I'll also get low profile RAM and also a SFX PSU to give more clearance to the fan in the back of the case. I think that might get me decent results, especially with no overclock. If not then I'll try the AIO cooler.

Now the last question I have is how to orient the case fans, should they all be pulling air out of the case, or should some of them be pushing air in?

I think the case is designed to have the 3 left and right fans as inlet and the air to exit everywhere else, mainly at the rear via the two 80mm fans but also through the GPU out the back of the PCIe slots and through a vent directly over the top of the hot end of the GPU.

With the air cooler you should first try with the 3 120s as inlets and with the left one of the two 80mm fans as an outlet. I didn’t find the second 80mm particularly useful without making a baffle (I tried it in the GD05) as it just pulls cool air around the corner from the nearby 120.

Blower GPUs are definitely better for case temps in this case. The second 80mm exit fan may be more useful if you don’t have a blower perhaps.

I’m not sure what a SFX PSU will do to the airflow. The case is designed for an ATX PSU to get its own air from the LHS and to be independent. You will need to buy an adapter to mount the SFX PSU. If you use it to put the PSU fan facing left up against the air intake that will be similar to the intended config for ATX PSUs but there will be a gap where the SFX is smaller than the ATX letting air out the LHS. You might want to seal that gap.

The cable run for the motherboard power goes around the front of the case and is quite long. I think SFX PSU cables will be too short to reach. I’m pretty sure SF600 cables will be too short. It may be better to go with a short ATX PSU. It shouldn’t be too difficult to find one which will not obstruct the left fan position.

Hope it works out well for you. Don’t forget to post some pics and case temps when you are done.

The front panel and top panel gap looks OK in those pictures. Did you fix it somehow?

I would have gone with the new black noctuas. I guess you must be one of those people that like the original color.

I have some brown NFA20 200mm fans in one of my builds which I bought a few months before Noctua released black versions. I’m desperate to swap them for black ones but they are pretty expensive and it’s hard to justify that just to change the color.

Hello all,

Ok bought the following and now finding the stock cooler very noisy when 4K x265 encoding:

Grandia GD09
Gigabyte Z490M UD
i5 10400 (Stock)
Gigabyte mini itx oc GTX1650
Corsair LPX 3000 ram
Earth watts 380 psu

The setup is for encoding and playing 4K HDR. Most of it is quiet, though the gpu runs its fan all the time whereas the 1060 in another rig when not gaming stops its fans. Anyway when maxing the cpu it sounds like a small tornado. Had this issue with the gaming rig and fitted a cooler master 212 evo. Obviously can’t fit that in this case.

I’m using the optical bay for a BD writer and both 3.5” hdd bays. So what are my options?

Tried a noctua L12S and it hits the hdd under the optical bay.
