I remember Buildzoid working on a 2080TI a few years back where if I remember correctly he tried shunt modding on the card but it was not successful. I also recall Derbauer having a video on his old channel were he encountered the same issues with a 2080.
Thanks. I'll see if I can dig those videos up. I did a Google search last night but was just looking at forum posts mostly as I didn't have time to watch videos.

I will say on a more general note to anyone thinking about shunt modding, although it's a bit tedious simply due to the small size of the components, it wasn't difficult at all with just a few relatively inexpensive tools. The shunts on the 2060 are harder to get to than the Astral at least (some other 5090's look a bit more crowded around the shunts) and I didn't have any trouble with it (didn't breakt the card at least, success wasn't really achieved obviously for some reason though). One of the stacked shunts near the IO panel ended up a bit misaligned, but not enough to be an issue. That was the first one I tried. Probably should have started with the easy one on the back of the PCB.

When I have time I'll take this back apart and re-inspect the shunts and maybe touch them up with a bit more solder. Biggest challenge I had really was just being able to examine them properly. I have a decent desktop maginfier, but one of those microscopes like @Carillo showed in a screenshot would be a lot better. I'm not sure how good they are, but some of them are relatively inexpensive (~$200 US). I'm sure they're all Chinese made, so I probably should just grab one before the insane tariffs kick in if I want it.

Nevertheless, the soldering is the easiest part really, so I don't think it makes sense to use paint/epoxy as that would still have the same challenges of the tiny size of the resistors, trying to inspect them to be sure they have good contact, and being careful of nearby components.

I think I found the BZ video where he managed to get it to mostly working but took additional mods from what I saw skimming the video. He even mentioned der8auer having issues with it. I'll watch them all when I have more time. Thanks again for pointing this out. Helps a bunch.

Probably just onward to the Astral when I have time. We're lucky 50 series is easier to shunt mod.

@Carillo @motivman Did either of you shunt the PCIE slot on your 5090s? I'm guessing no, but want to verify.

No, only the two related to the 12 pin

No problem glad I could help. I shunt modded last night but only the 2 shunts at the power connector. I noticed on my 5090 Suprim that very little power are getting pulled over the PCIE slot so I do not believe it will benefit a lot by going through that process.

As long as the PCIE slot limit in the bios is still 75-80w like past gens (30 series for example), then it'll be 100% fine. I suspect it must be given others success.

I didn’t.

Fattest list of fixes I've ever seen in an NVIDIA driver release, honestly much better than I was expecting despite the month long wait

Now it's time to wait for data to trickle in and make sure these issues are actually fixed (NVIDIA loves to say things are fixed when they aren't like the everpresent DPC latency issues) and that we don't have any further performance regression :)

EK WB for Astral is coming my home! I gave up with Alphacool after all the fake claims did in last two and half months.

Good performance the new drivers in my case
